My partner is self employed and because he does not have as much work as we expected we now claim Housing Benefit, Council tax benefit, Working Tax Credit and Child Tax Credit.
There is a lot you CAN get but it's a lot of effort, form filling and mind bending maths to do (says she who spent the last hour working out figures for the HB form!)
You can claim Working tax credit if he works over 16 hours and child tax credit if you have children. They can ask for estimate figures for now as the last tax year is obviously not indicative of current circumstances, then at renewal time they'll ask for your actual figures but if things aren't any better ask them to calculate it on a Current Year basis so you get the maximum you can.
If you rent you can apply for housing benefit, more forms but well worth it!
[As an example, my OH currently only has 3 days work a week, not even full days and we have 2 kids, I don't work as they are only toddlers. We recieve £120 HB and £140 total tax credits a week. I have to say, it's a big help, but I would rather business picked up instead!]
    Best of luck!
