Finding out if probate has been granted

Hi all

My mother's cousin died last July and at the funeral another relative said to her that she had been left some money in his Will. My mother had no knowledge of this, and certainly wasn't expecting anything, although for several years his father (my great uncle) spent a lot of time with our family and we wondered if it was just a thank you for this. There was no mention of any sum involved, the cousin's wife passed away a couple of years ago and they had no children and as far as my mother was aware the estate was being split between various nieces and nephews.

However, since the funeral my mother has heard nothing, and is not even sure who the executors of the Will are. How does she go about finding out if probate has been granted, and maybe get a copy of the Will to see if she was mentioned or if it was just idle talk at a funderal (the person who told her was a distant relative on cousin's wife's side so could have got the wrong end of the stick).

I told my mum I'd ask you lovely people if you could give some advice - thank you x

  • If you can't get to the Probate Office you can post off a Standing Search form and send a cheque for £5 and the Probate Registry will send you copy of any Grant of Representation.
  • You can get a copy of the will for about £4.

A couple of yeasrs ago I got a copy of a relatives will on line for £3 in those days.

You can get a copy of anybody's will.

  • These people offer a service on line. I believe it costs £18. Can't recommend them as I haven't used them but it may help.
