OK - here goes

1518, change Leeds and Middlesbrough, arr 1906
that is, 3 1/2 to 4 hours
Option 2
Train Bradford Interchange to York, then GNER Bus to Whitby
At 0818, 1018, 1318, 1618
journey 3 1/2 to 4 1/2 hrs
Option 3
Train Bradford Interchange to York, then Yorkshire Coastliner bus to Whitby
0818 and every 2 hours. journey 4 - 4 1/2 hours
can save a bit of time by changing trains at York to a Scarborough train and then getting the Coastliner bus from Malton. Might be lucky and cut it to 3 hours!
How much?
£10 single (with senior railcard) if booking ahead via the internet, phone or at the station.
Saver £22.85 return, can be bought at the station just before departure. (assuming yr mum is returning with 1 month)
That's by using the train-only option. Combined bus and train will be slightly more expensive £6.95 single Bradford to York, £6 bus York to Whitby.0
