Car Insurance for someone not yet passed

I am taking my test in about 3 weeks time but am buying a mates car at the weekend. Ideally I would like to go out on the road when I can before my test so what do I do about insurance?

Can I get insurance as a provisional license holder and if I do will it be a lot more expensive than if i wait until after I have passed and done the Pass Plus?

Anyone give me a pointer as to what to do?

It is usually cheaper for a provisional licence holder than someone who has just got a full licence.

Try some virtual quotes online and see the differences it makes using the two profiles (provisional licence v full). Though bear in mind if it is cheaper with a provisional that once you pass your test you will have to tell the insurer, and an increase in premium may follow.

Be very careful. Some insurers (like Quinn) doubled the quote from provisional to full licence, others (like direct line) make no charge.

I would get a quote on the basis of a full licence and then amend the quote to provisional.

  • I found Endsleigh insurance to be the cheapest about a year ago, based on my circumstances. It can be difficult to get an online quote, as most of the forms assume you have a full license (i.e. you've passed your test) already. Good luck.
  • Thanks for the replies guys.

I've had a look around and have seen a few Pay as you Go type offers. Could this be an idea, go on PAYG until I've passed and then get "real" insurance?

We couldn't get PAYG for my sons when they passed for some reason, it was so high they said they were really unable to give a competitive price.

In fact as soon as my sons passed their test they could no longer afford to drive, which was a dreadful shame.

However, I agree with the others shop around as companies have preferences for areas and car types and just because one insurer is cheap for one person doesn't mean they will be for everyone. The quotes we got varied between £1800 and £4000 for the same car and the (obviously) same address.

i don';t know of any sites that assume this - every site i've seen ask what license type yhou have, and "provisional" is an option:confused::confused::confused:
