Hi I've got a family of 6 and used to be able to do the grocery shopping for between £60 and £70 a week now its £80 - £90  sometimes more, sometimes less depending on whats on the menu. I menu plan & stick to the shopping list religiously but struggle. Guess its the price increases. Sometimes I have to get strict on the rooting in the cupboards for food as well which makes me feel mean :o

hi,I have 6 adults to feed and I am spending about £50.00 a week. The only way I can do it is by going to the supermarket in the evenings and buying up the reduced meat, fruit, veg ect.I also stockpile,if I see a really good offer I might buy 6/12 months worth. We have a shed that we store everything in and its like going to the supermarket. We stocked up beans when they were 80p for 4 tins,we still have about 60 tins left.We use longlife milk which is 50p a ltr,and I fill the freezer with the 5p/10p bread from the supermarket. If I shopped during the day I know I would have to double my food bill.

This is how I'd like to do it but I don't have a large freezer, just the small one on top of the fridge. I've got a chest freezer coming from Freecycle but the lady isn't moving house for another month so will need it until then. I have very little storage space either - I'm storing washing powder, loo rolls, flour & sugar in my wardrobe as it is :D It must be very useful to be able to take advantage of the whoopsied stuff at night & I can't wait to do it. I'll definitely have to take a leaf out of your book :T
  • i use to be able to feed the 6 of us easily on £50 a week but its so much harder now.everything is going up in price.

  • hi, we are a family of 6 and had to increase budget to £250 a month. That includes £24 school dinners (per month 1 meal for 3 kids on a friday) and my box of monthly wine. I am findind it harder and harder. I meal plan shop for month of staples on line and do top up shops for fruit, veg and meat buying local then milk and bread. I bake a lot but got wise and use slow cooker and batch bake.:D . I guess we can only do what we can. Our local supermarket doesn't seem to do many whoppsies and I don't drive. But I have a great shopping trolley:rotfl:

  • I think before I joined the Grocery challenge, I was spending about £600 a month for a 6 - 2 adults, 4 boys ages, 14,12,10 &6. In February I managed to get the spend down to £499. In March I am aiming for £450 and I think that I will keep that for my monthly target. I am more confident that, if I had to lower it, I could. I find it so impressive they way people on the board cope on a tight budget.
