I have recently given up work to look after my baby.Normaly I don't have housekeeping money we just go shopping together and pay for it out of our joint bank account. But seeing has I am going to be at home more now and doing the shopping on my own I was wondering what amount you thought was reasonable for a family of three for a months food budget including nappies.Hope this makes sense thanks in advance.
  • Reasonable depends entirely on one's means, I think. I shop for one and spend less than £20 a week at the moment but that's because I'm on a really strict budget

We are a family of 4 (2 kids, one still in nappies) and I aim (but don't always hit) £40 a week for us all. I do bulk buy my meat from Costco, although tend to buy a large chicken each week.

It really depends on what you eat, what you are prepared to reduce etc. What do you currently spend and how much of that would you consider to be a luxury?

That depends on so many things, that it's impossible for someone else to advise you how much you'll need ;) As this has fallen from the front page of OS, I'll add it to the existing thread we have on this subject so that you can see what others spend.

  • Hope you have a lovely time as a sahm - i think it's the best job in the world!!
Regarding your budget, why not look back through the past 6 months/year bank statements and see how much you actually spend, take an average and start from that - then if need be you can reduce slowly as you make savings.
    good luck,

I don't budget per-se, but try not to spend more than £100 a month (it's just me). Usually it's around £80. I do my weekly shop on a Sunday morning, and have a little top-up shop on a Friday evening after work, to buy myself something nice for my tea that night, and for the weekend.
I alternate my weekly shop between Tesco and Sainsburys. Sainsburys is marginally more expensive, but much closer than Tesco. But at Tesco I tend to be able to get more for my money.

I'd check out the monthly grocery challenge at the top of the page. Everyone who takes part in it lists what they are going to spend each month.

Buy your bananas in bunches of 5 on Sunday. Then arrange them in order of ripeness and write a day of the week on each banana in felt pen, Monday on the ripest, Friday on the greenest to save time making those decisions on a hectic weekday morning
