Morning all.
yesterday was a bit of a disaster all round really! Phone line and broadband not working at home; we've narrowed it down to downstairs phone socket and I'm going to check if broadband works when I get home this afternoon otherwise I'll have another computer free weekend to cope with.
Had my appointment at the antenatal clinic to discuss my glucose tolerance test and it was awful. Midwife telling me off for not bringing a sample, then telling me off cos my bp has gone up from 81/53, via 124/61 to 139/73 - no wonder I was getting a headache). Obstetrician then told me I definitely had gestational diabetes and my pregnancy was now considered to be high-risk and I'd possibly be induced at 38 weeks. I said I wasn't bothered as long as I could have my waterbirth and she then made me cry when she said No, a waterbirth is out of the question now! I've got to do finger p-rick blood tests four times a day and eat low GI/GL foods to try to reduce my blood glucose levels and go back next week for more tests. If I can't control it with diet they're looking at insulin to control it!
Then saw the diabetologist and dietician. The dietician knows my mum (she's had type 1 diabetes for over 50 years) and was saying that my mum can help me with information. I had to point out that my mum is an expert at cheating; if she wants a slice of rich fruit cake at christmas, she simply increases her insulin so that it all balances out!
So I'm off out at lunchtime to get some books on GI and GL foods (thankfully I have some book tokens left from Christmas so it might not cost too much).
Reasons to be miffed about this;
finger prick tests four times a day
have to worry about my blood glucose levels
am now high risk
can't have a waterbirth
Looking for the bright side:
I'm still pregnant and will hopefully have a gorgeous little girl at the end of it
I know about the diabetes and can work to get it under control
I'll definitely not go beyond my due date and might even have her early
I'm going to have even more scans than I do at the moment:D
All this healthy eating - I might even lose a bit of weight
I'm sure there's loads more but that'll do for now.
Hope everyone's having a great day and I might join you tonight with glass of... sparkling water:o (if my broadband is working at home)

Cat, sorry it went so badly but like you've said you are still pregnant and she's going to be gorgeous. Don't worry about the water birth too much just concentrate on the fact you are going to have that lovely wee baby at the end of it all. Hope you manage to get it all under control with the eating though - my mum had it with little bro and it all went well in the end. x
Actually Cat, I've just had a look in the cupboard and have a couple of GI books so if you want them just PM me your address.Mortgage OP 2025 £7050/7000Mortgage OP 2024 £7700/7000
