Variation in TV Model Numbers

We're considering purchasing a PANASONIC TH-37PX80 TV. Whilst looking at reviews and price comparisons, I've also seen it called TH-37PX80BA & PANASONIC TH-37PX80B.

So I'm wondering as a general point, when these appliances have additional letters, does this mean that there's minor variations, presumably due to the manufacturer making minor improvements? Or is it simply different sites using minor variations in the model number that they quote?

I dont believe theres any difference between the 2. Go searching the AV forums if you wish to, but if memory serves correct theyre 1 and the same (Just diff codes depending on where its sold)

B means it is fitted with a 3 pin plug for use in Britain and will pick up Freeview. However if you see one advertised in the UK and it doesn't have a B or BA on the end it will still be one of those when you get it. Some retailers just don't bother putting the suffixes on their adverts or websites. I can't remember what the A is for but to all intents and purposes the TV's are the same.

    I work at a retailer...

Some model numbers - are there for:
    • To discourage price matching. ("we only price match exact model numbers")
    • Slight differance in certain "chip boards" they use.
    • To track "sales" from different retailers...
Thats what we get told! HA. I believe it's to do with the first one.....

it is a combination of the first and last part of e00c's post..

1 retailer will have 1 model, another another model, and a generic model for everyone else... it means that currys can have the tv at £749, with a silver trim and a blue glowing light, comet will have it at £699 with a black trim and a blue glowing light, and online/indie retailers will have it at £549 with a black trim and an orange glowing light..

theoretically, all different models, so no price matching, and the consumer gets shafted if they don't research!

Dixons/Currys group are well know to sell tv with slightly different model numbers I also believe its to discourage comparisons

IE Samsung tv for example. Some models have a very small couple of mm width plastic strip running along in a different colour standard model and then change the model number ever so slightly
