Power surge on hub port problem

Hi guys,
Hope someone can help with this...
I plugged in my digital camera to download some pics, and a loud noise came from the PC, so I unplugged the lead and restarted the computer in the hope that this would sort the problem out.
The following message came up when it was restarted.
Power surge on hub port
A USB device has exceeded the power limits of its hub port.
For assitance in solving this problem, click this message.
When I wiggled the mouse connection to the PC I was able to click it, and got this...
USB root hub (6 ports)
unused port
unused port
unknown USB device
unknown USB device
unknown USB device
unknown USB device
I have downloaded many many pics onto my PC using the very same connection method and have never had any problems at all.
The only things which were plugged into the PC were the normal ones. (monitor, keypad, mouse and printer)
A friend did manage to get thing right by clicking around on the screen which came up and is now up again, as when the PC was shut down it went wrong again. He lives a long way away and I don't see him very often, also he can't remember what he clicked to put it right.
The message on the screen says...
Del:setup F8:Boot Menu F12:Network boot
CMOS/GPNV Checksum Bad
Press F1 to Run SETUP
Press F2 tom load default values and continue
Luckily my eldest Son bought me a new Laptop for Christmas which I'm currently using, but I have loads of things on the PC which I do not want to loose, so any advice would be very much appreciated.
Very many thanks in advance...

Have a look at the physical condition of the usb sockets on your pc.
It may be that one of them is defective and the outside contact is touching the inside core.
By the way, this can be dangerous and can cause really severe overheating to the point the connection starts melting and possibly worse. I've seen this melting occur twice - once with a hong kong usb hub and once on a usb on a motherboard (where the device usb plug was broken).0 -

Hi Chunter, many thanks for your help...
I'm not too techie minded I'm afraid, but, I've taken a look at the ports, and they do all seems clean and in good condition.
I'm rather concerned that this can be potentially dangerous though!
As far as I know none of them are Hong Kong USB hubs, and I've been using them all for a very long time.
Everything was working fine until I tried to download my pics, it was as soon as the lead was plugged in that the noise and the problem started.
Any further advice would be very much appreciated.
Thanks guys.................................... MSE MARTIN LEWIS ... :A ... THANK YOU.......................0 -
If it's still at the F1/F2 screen, try F1, then save settings, if that doesn't work try the F2. If it's 5 years old, the cmos battery may be on it's way out.
Your data is probably fine, but use it as a nudge to backup if you have files you don't want to lose.
Hi Loaner, I've done the F2 and it has worked... :j
Thank you and Chunter so very much...
I'm on the old PC ATM, and will log off soon, so hopefully when I shut the computer down all will be well, if not I'll probalby be back for help again...
You are all smashing on MSE...:A and I'm proud to be amongst you.
Many many thanks again xxx................................... MSE MARTIN LEWIS ... :A ... THANK YOU.......................0 -
Hi guys,
Sorry to bring this back up again, but unfortunately the problem keeps reoccuring each time I switch the PC off.
Sometimes the keypad and mouse will not work to press F2 as Loaner suggested previously.
On other occasions I'm able to wiggle the mouse & keypad to carry out the F2 proceedure...
Any help to correct this will be very much appreciated.
Thanks in advance.................................... MSE MARTIN LEWIS ... :A ... THANK YOU.......................0 -
Are the keyboard and mouse wireless (if so, batteries ok?), how old is the pc, if it keeps losing cmos settings, it may need a new cmos battery
Hi again Loaner, many thanks for your help previously...
The keyboard & mouse aren't wireless.
I'm not too techie minded I'm afraid, so I'm not too sure what cmos settings are ...
The PC itself is probably about 7 years old, just a guess as I got it from a friend about 3 years ago when she upgraded.................................... MSE MARTIN LEWIS ... :A ... THANK YOU.......................0 -
7 years is around the limit of how long they last, they cost a couple of quid from high street shops

Can't explain the keyboard problem, has your usb problem gone away
Thank you for taking the time to reply...
The keyboard & mouse problems did only start when I connected the digital camera to download pics, which I've done for over 2 years now with the same equipment...
Your help is so much appreciated, as I said in post one I have some very important & sentimental pics etc which I do not wish to loose.................................... MSE MARTIN LEWIS ... :A ... THANK YOU.......................0 -
Back them up to CD or DVD, a hard disk can fail at any time.
Is it a usb keyboard/mouse?
It is and I've had both now for a year or more with no problems.
I can't back anything up ATM as I'm not able to get anything going now even with your help from a few days ago, as it seems to be very random as to whether the mouse & keyboard work!
Very annoying to be quite honest.................................... MSE MARTIN LEWIS ... :A ... THANK YOU.......................0 -
Could you try a different usb port?
So currently, you can't get into windows? Did the camera ever work after you had the power surge message
I've tried switching usb ports, to no avail.
No I can't get into windows or any programs at all.
I can't get any further after pressing F2, then the mouse is flashing as though it's working fine, but cannot get it to go furthar ATM when I get the next message to continue, as it isn't showing up on screen where the cursor is.
Almost like I'm not asking anything of the mouse if you see what I mean.
Hope that makes sense!................................... MSE MARTIN LEWIS ... :A ... THANK YOU.......................0 -
Are you still getting this?
Del:setup F8:Boot Menu F12:Network boot
CMOS/GPNV Checksum Bad
Press F1 to Run SETUP
Press F2 tom load default values and continue
including bad checksum?
Does F1 take you to the bios screen?
Hold on a mo, I'll turn it on again to see...................................... MSE MARTIN LEWIS ... :A ... THANK YOU.......................0 -

Yeas Loaner I'm getting exactly the same message coming up.
I haven't tried F1 yet.
Also It does boot me off of AOL on the Laptop when I switch the PC on...
Both are set up to receive wireless broadband, and the connections are all connected to the PC.
Does that help?................................... MSE MARTIN LEWIS ... :A ... THANK YOU.......................0
