Meter changing

I understand that there are regulations regarding how frequently electric meters should be changed but having searched the web and cannot find what the regulations are.

My electricity meter was last changed in 1987, I wondered if anyone knew when it would be likely to be changed again?

We've just had our electricity meter changed. Have been in this house around 35 years and it has been changed once previously.
