Thanks so much for that info, that's brilliant.
I don't plan to go to Aswan. We've ended up quite tight for time which is a bit of a shame - particularly in Cairo. I'm going to have one full day and two nights so going to try and see as much as possible. I have four nights in Luxor so that shouldn't be as rushed and then Sharm for 4 nights.
As I only have the one full day running into the evening in Cairo, I was thinking about doing the pyramids first thing (they are really near our hotel), then getting a taxi to the Islamic quarter to see the bazaar, the mosques and traditional cafes. Then midday into the Egyptian museum for a couple of hours (I'm a red head so midday in Egypt = inside!). I was then thinking that then we'd head to the Dokki/Mohandesen areas on the west bank of the Nile for lunch and beers. Thinking about going on a felucca on the Nile for sunset and a wander along the Corniche and Garden City before heading back for dinner.
Does this sound unrealistic? I'm thinking both in terms of time, getting around with taxis etc and getting a feel for the city in a day.0 -

I am out of breath just reading this but give it your best shot - especially if you are not planning to go back. I found everything did take longer - I personally think of it as "egyptian time" - though the greater part of my visit was during Ramadan which might explain that.
I suggest you keep your itinerary as your "aim" but be prepared to adjust it as needed to give yourself time to enjoy the experience e.g I went to the Khan el Khalili and enjoyed it but it wasn't high on my must-do list and i would have skipped it if pushed. On the other hand, I was fascinated by the 5000yr old barques exhibitied at the Pyramids and spent quite a bit of time there that i hadn't planned in advance.
So, go and enjoy the country that calls itself the "Mother of Civilisation".0
