Lake District cottages

We're looking to book a cottage in the Lake District for a week in late summer.
There are lots of sites with cottages on - does anyone have any recommendations which to use - maybe someone you've booked through in the past?

Hi,we always book with www.ruralretreats.co.uk ,and find them very good,we've been in their places all over the country and find them to be very good.
I can also add it is worth getting thier brochure sent to you as well,we see lots you dont necessarily see online, and once you've been with them they offer discounts on your next bookings!0 -
Hi
I have booked a cottage through Sykes Cottages for my honeymoon in September. Recommended by a friend.

Wheelwrights are good, if a little pricey. In my experience the agencies that specialise in the LD are much of a muchness. Have a look at lakedistrictonline, amblesideonline etc for owner managed cottages that don't use an agency.
This owners advertising site is worth a look through - http://www.cottageguide.co.uk/cumbria/
These are my favourites http://www.tilberthwaitefarmcottage.com/cottage.htm
http://www.fellfootfarm.co.uk/.....................I'm smiling because I have no idea what's going on ...:)

Hi,
I tend to book through holidaylettings.co.uk. You go direct to the owner and book from there. The staff at the site have always been very helpful though if I've needed to call there for any reason.
Wherever you end up booking, I hope you have a lovely break.0 -
Thanks very much everyone, will go and check these recommendations out!0

Check with local tourist board and go by their star ratings, these are a genuine indication of standards, including cleanliness. Not in Lake district but this is good and not too pricey. Visit Lincolnshire-Trenthouse.0

I have always booked directly through the owners.
Has worked out cheaper than going through an agent.
Of course it all depends if you can find what you need
If you go to the Ambleside online website there is quite a good selection on there

There are two fairly new sites that might be of help:
www.mycottageholiday.co.uk
www.therealvisitorsbook.co.uk
Both these sites specialise in guest reviews of UK cottages etc. and may be useful to you
