Reflective radiator shelf

Anyone seen anything like this on their travels?

My grandparents had a wood-burner in their old house, and it had a shelf on the wall about 2' above it. This shelf was horizontal (duh!) but the underside of the shelf was curved and clad with shiny metal - presumably designed to throw heat back into the room.

In my kitchen, we have a lovely painting hung on the wall, directly over the radiator. As the painting is quite big, it comes down quite close to the top of the radiator, and when the heating is on, the bottom of the canvas gets quite warm. The painting is just a hung canvas (i.e. no frame) so I'm worried that over time it might get damaged by the heat.

I want to put a shelf up - something similar to that described above - that will direct the majority of the heat away from my precious painting!

Any ideas, clever people?

Beth - a normal radiator shelf should do the job well enough as it will deflect the heat from rising direct to your painting and throw it out towards the room. I haven't seen anything with a metal underside but haven't particularly looked.

I've been looking for something similar to go over radiators on outside walls but haven't found one yet. Looks as though it will be a DIY adaptation of a conventional shelf.

Though not reflective I have 3 white shelves over my rads to direct heat away from window & into room.

    available from B & Q & Taskers online.

You don't have to drill walls just attach the brackets to the shelf & slide down the back of radiator., hey presto, hope it helps someone. :)
  • I have a related problem. My night storage heaters are not the new ultra slim ones, and not the huge ones, they date from about 1980s I should think. I need a heat resistant shelf to go over the top. I have plasterboard stud walls, so if there was something that clipped onto the heater that would be great. Any suggestions?
