    I had the same situation recently and had to make the decision just as the banks were begining to go bust!

    In the end I chose NS & I index linked saving certicficates, partly for security (government owned) but also because they match the rate of inflation so it means if inflation rises, 10k will still be worth the same in 'tomorrows' terms. (inflation is low at the moment). You also get 1% interest, which isn't great but can't have it all!

    You can chose 3 or 5 years and just renew till they are 18. You can hold in trust but need to ask for special forms.
