Lost Icons and Start Bar

Hi,
Did post this last week but no one came forward so trying again pls,have a dell laptop which we use as a second machine,works well,but few weeks ago the Icons and the Start Bar completely went,you can see the screensave pic but nothing else,we can get onto it via the Control,Alt,Delete entry method but this is not good,any idea how I can retrieve the icons and the start bar?

Right click anywhere on your desktop and click show desktop Icons.That should do it and then download MBAM,update and perform full scan.

I had this exact same problem on a works Dell laptop, running XP, last week. No icons or start menu and only able to use task manager (Ctrl+Alt+Del) same thing was happening in safe mode.
The problem was explorer.exe was missing from the processes, tried to run it from new task but it said it was missing.
I tried a repair install from the XP disc but it was still the same.
I installed malwarebytes by navigating (file-new task- browse) to the downloaded installer on my pendrive updated it and ran a scan.It found a Trojan in the registry, I deleted it, rebooted and everything was back to normal
