  • I'd normally say she'll be ok but because my hamster displayed the same symptoms a few years back and did die, I think you should take her to the vet. They may not be able to do anything but they may be able to make what could potentially be her last few weeks more comfortable.

i think you should take her to the vets. if an animal is off their food it means theres something wrong.she could be in pain

Take her to the vets - if she's dying they'll put her to sleep to stop her suffering.

i think you should have taken her to the vets the day you realised it wasn't a one off.

Am I the only one who let their hamster die naturally?

I knew my hamster was going to die soon because it got old and cranky, slept all the time, and was once very affectionate but had turned into an evil wee thing! I just left them them too it.

It'd depend if the hamster was suffering or not as to if I left it alone to die really, if like in the OP it wasn't eating & drinking i'd assume it was suffering & take it to be PTS. I don't remember how mine died, one I just found had died overnight but he was old, another I had PTS, not sure on the rest

i agree. you wouldnt leave a dog or a cat to suffer in pain until they die, so why a hamster? if they arent in pain then fair enough but if they're suffering, which would be suggested if its off its food, then id take it to the vets. my gerbil has a stroke and went blind so we had him PTS, poor little thing was a little paralysed and would have starved to death.

I didn't mean if it was in pain, I'm not cruel, mine became very anti-social and just slept mostly, but it still came out for grub and water.

A friend of mine at college, he used to have hamsters, and when they got old his dad used to peg them to the washing line and whack them with a spade....sick.

We had a "Hammy" Hamster, daughter was nine, the hamster was two. (Life span) Hammy's fur became thin as did he, he looked very ill. I wanted him out of his misery. Daughter was adamant, he will get better.

Waited till she'd gone to school, took him to Vet to PTS, Vet asked if I wished to be present? No i didn't. Strange that, as I stayed with my previous dog and brought him home for burial.

I waited outside. Then a horrible scream from Hammy and the Vet called me in. Vet showed me the empty syringe, which to this day I find strange.
Why did he do that? Haunts me even now.

Brought Hammy home, put him in his cage and told daughter he'd died.
I would never tell her the truth, even 7 years on now.

If, OP you take your Hamster to be PTS, stay if you can bear it, I wish I had. Just turn your back.
All animals deserve a peaceful end, even tiny Hamsters. That scream will never leave me.
