I make a huge batch, enough for 5 days. Sometimes if I forget to have it on the 5th day I have it on the 6th day and it's usually OK, any longer and it starts going whiffy.

    Hi rockie,

To maximise the vitamins it's best to make fresh smoothies but depending on the ingredients they will keep for a day or two. There's an earlier thread on this so I've added your thread to it to keep the replies together.

  • Many vitamins are antioxidents (eg vit c)this means two things
    1. they will start reacting with the air as soon as the veg is pulped and the vitamin content will decline.
    2. the vitamins will help to keep the thing fresh.

I suspect that smoothies containing lots of vit C (orange, lemon, blackcurrent juices etc should keep better than others. fruits which tend to go brown on exposure to air (bananas, apples etc) should probably be avoided (or used in smaller quantities). for max vitamin and antioxidents drink fresh.

The other thing that happens when freezing is that the water will freeze out first leaving a concentrated syrup of everything else (including alot of the best bits). you could try freezing in an icecream maker as this is designed to keep the ice crystals and sludge well mixed, alternatively just mix well once defrozen.

an alternative solution would be to freeze the prepared fruit in batches and wizz up a batch of fruit in a bit of juice with the hand blender each morning, a two minute job, ice cold smoothie (stick it in a flask to take to work).

    Hi all

Sorry if this is a daft question but I was wondering if you lose the nutrition if you make a fruit smootie the evening before for breakfast the next day.

I like to make a raspberry or blueberry one with banana, soya milk and soya yoghurt. Would the banana go manky overnight too??

    Thanks.

    Hi squirrelchops,

I prefer to make them fresh but some people have posted on this thread that they make them in advance:

I'll add your thread to that one later to keep the replies together.

I have made them in advance and sometimes they have gone a funny colour and not looked appetising the next day. I think it is due to the fruit oxidising.

I make them in advance all the time, if my LO knows whats in it he won't drink it but if he doesn't he'll scoff the lot!

Sometimes they can look less appetising and any liquid tends to seperate from the fruit but a quick stir and it's fine :D

I make a big container which lasts me about 36 hours,
I put all sorts in mine as Im not a big eater so have 2 or 3 glasses a day.
I also as well as rasps, strawbs, bananas, blueberries, put mixed chopped nuts, honey (i hate honey ut you cant taste it) carrot with raspberries, couple of sprouts, honestly you
cannot taste them at all, god how I hate sprouts but Im getting the nutrients.
My blender is the best thing that I got for my birthday last year.
Usually fill it up with cranberry or Orange juice.
make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.
  • I did the Juice dr diet a few years ago and he recommended that the smoothies or juices be made fresh and drunk within two hr as after this time the nutrient value was significally reduced.
