Idiot Proof Pudding

Ok last night i sat down with my two sons who i am VERY VERY VERY proud of and we discussed the fact that every night after tea they get a sweet or bar of chocolate out of the bowl they have.

While im pretty proud of the fact that unlike alot of kids in my area sweets and chocolate arn't a staple part of thier diet,as i see many kids who eat sweets 3-4 times a day, my niece across the road has a bowl that she can help her self to any time she likes, while mine have a limited amount only after thier dinner if thier dinner is eaten.

however i still felt this was too much, i'd never intended for them to eat so many sweets, and once upon a time i wouldn't have dreamed of giving them sweets more than once a week, it just seems that with halloween (which we atill trying to get though the sweets from), christmas etc everytime i turn around this sweet bowl is heaving full and i'm trying to empty it again without just letting my kids gorge themselfs. While 3 months after halloween my kids still have well over half thier sweets left, my niece had finished hers within 3 days.

Anyway as the months go buy even though i can't remember the last time i actually bought any sweets this bowl has got bigger and bigger because with all the celebrations the kids get more sweets than i allow them to eat.

Last night my little boys who are 7 and 9 sat down with me while we discussed the "fate" of the sweetie bowl, basically i said i wasn;t happy with the them having sweeties EVERY night and that other than tasting nice sweeties had nothing good in them, i explained about nasty colours and flavors etc, and in the end we came to a comprimise.

They helped me throw way 3 full carrier bags of sweets keeping only thier favorites (yes 3 full bags!!!!) and we struck a deal which i was very proud of them for because they didn't make a fuss.

Instead of them having a sweet after dinner every night, i would let them have sweets some nights but the other nights i would make dessert instead.

Ok so here i am Britains WORST COOK!!!!! begging for help.

The way i figure it is if i learn to bake etc even though they will still be getting suger after dinner they won't be getting all the nasy flavors and colours etc, and im pretty damn sure there is less suger in homemade biscuits/cakes etc, icecream etc than there is in ikky sticky artifical kids sweets.

Anyway i didn't really think this though haha, im a working mum i don't get home till 7pm and i need dessert idea's especially one for tonight.

I need the recipe and any "cooking utensils" ill need, so i can go and buy them on my lunch break.

I really want to turn this "sweetie bowl" thing on it's head, but it;s only going to work if i can replace the sweets with something my kids with enjoy without feeling like they somehow missed out on something.

Any ideas??!!

You can't really beat banana custard for idiot proof. There would be colours etc in the custard powder but not as much junk as in the sweeties and it would be quick for day one - you could buy ready made custard, the Asda extra special type one is vert nice.

With more time you could get some gelatine crystals and set some fruit in juice or if you are ok with comercial jelly if would be easier - my kids loved a mousse made with this, whip chilled evaporated milk until thick and then whip in a made up jelly (made with half the water and left to get cool but not set)
It sets straight away - you have get it in to dishes quickly.

Just a couple of thoughts as I'm off to work now - good luck.

ETA - just seen your list, if you bought the evap, you could use the mousse idea, it makes loads, and serve it with the fruit, easy peasy.

  • I know i will get flamed here but they dont need to have something sweet after their dinner, if they are still hungry cant they have fruit?
  • My kidlets used to love banana nut bread, or loaf as I believe it's called here. Very easy to do with bananas that are going off. You can also mash and freeze any overripe bananas so you can pull it out and make it on short notice. It's in american measures so I'll convert it later if you'd like. Just keep in mind that an american cup is 8 ounces on the liquid scale not weight. I don't have a kitchen scale so I have convert from metric to american a lot of times. I've really got to get with the times.:rotfl:
    Banana Nut Bread Recipe
    1c.sugar
    1/2 c. shortening
    2 eggs
    2 c.sifted flour
    1 tsp. baking soda
    1/2 tsp salt
    2 mashed bananas
    1 tsp vanilla
    1/2 c. nuts optional

Cream together sugar & shortening. Add eggs, beat till well-mixed. Sift together flour, soda, salt. Add to shortening mixture. Add bananas & vanilla. Bake in a greased loaf tin at 325 degrees for 50 minutes. Top should still be moist. It will set as it cools.

I didn't see cocoa on your list but Chocolate Fudge Pudding Cake is simple to make. It's very rich so you want to serve small portions for sure. See Thriftylady's recipe Chocolate Fudge Pudding Cake

Not going to get flamed at all hun. Fruit is an excellent after dinner sweet. It can also be fun to cut up apples etc in chunks, add some grapes, pineapple or whatever you have and serve with a yoghurt based fruit dip. Kids love spearing the fruit with cocktail sticks. Actually so do I!:rotfl:

1,000 Posts Combo Breaker I've been Money Tipped!
    Mine like

Plain yogurt drizzled with honey or sprinkled with dark brown sugar-the sugar melts a bit like a brulee.

Plain yogurt mixed with a fruit puree -apple, damson, raspberry

Tin Salad- a tin of mandarins, a tin of pineapple, a tin of peaches (all in juice not syrup) and a few grapes. Just pour the lot into a bowl.

    Fresh fruit salad

Bananas and cream -slice a banana each into a bowl, fold in whipped cream (not too much), some sultanas and a sprinkle of dark brown sugar. This is absolutely gorgeous;)

Baked apples stuffed with dried fruit and honey.
  • I've never looked at the label re colourings, but what about fruit jelly?

Not the ready-made pots, that's cheating!!
