Skype is OKish, mainly used by kids.
Skype to Skype calls are free, however calls to regular phones are charged and Skype are one of the dearest VoIP providers out there, plus the system is proprietary, so any hardware can only be used with Skype.
Now if you are interested in 'proper' / 'grown up' VoIP then there are many VoIP providers, offering various priced services, some with a local incoming number at no charge, voicemail at no charge and calls to the same network are free.
As most other VoIP providers use the SIP standard, you can buy a SIP phone or SIP ATA (analogue telephone adapter - allows you to connect regular home phones) or mobiles which allow SIP and you can change providers as and when you wish. You can even setup the system to use several providers depending on who/where you call to get the cheapest option, without any hassle past the set-up.
Vyke for example charge just 2p per call to many destinations. It's PAC not PAC Code, it's MAC not MAC Code, it's PIN not PIN Number, it's ATM not ATM Machine, it's LCD not LCD Display, it's DVD not DVD disc... It's no one not noone, It's a lot not alot, It's got not gotten... Panini is the plural of panino - there is no S!!(OK my English isn't great, the sciences, maths & IT are my strong points!)0 -
