Laptop not starting up- Help Plzz!!

Dear friends,
I have a problem with my laptop. Was wondering if anybody might help me.
I have a Gericom smartpower laptop abt 2 years old. Recently the laptop is not getting turned on. Whenever I switch it on, during booting it switches off. But if I manipulate the power cable going into the back of the laptop, it turns on. I thought there is something wrong with the cable, so I cut it open to see if any wires in it were cut or damaged but they were fine.
So I think it is the socket in the laptop or the plug which goes in it are loose???
My battery is also exhausted.... iknow i need to replace that as well.
Could you please advice what to do??
