I recently applied for a Fixed Rate Bond but they returned my application as I enclosed a building society cheque(Chelsea Classic) but they insist that the personal cheque must be from a HighSt bank.As it takes about 7 days for them to turn things round my post may save someone else making a fruitless application.
PS Given the fiasco at AIB I think they did me a favour.

The account has to be opened with a personal cheque from a high street bank as this
a) Gives them an account to pay any withdrawals too
b) Allows them to be more relaxed with ID proceedures, as you will have passed them to get the bank account.
What fiasco are you referring to? I don't feel my savings in Anglo Irish are any less safe than they were when I put them in months ago!0 -
This is the case with most online/postal accounts. A successfully deposited personal cheque is a useful verification of your identity.0

Are you saying they couldn't pay into a Building Society, and that a Building Society doesn't carry out ID checks the same way a high street bank does?0 -
Presumably, with a building society cheque, there's no way of knowing the cheque was obtained by the same person opening the new account. Are you saying they couldn't pay into a Building Society, and that a Building Society doesn't carry out ID checks the same way a high street bank does?0 -
All savings institutions will only accept B/S cheques - if at all - if there is a certification from the B/S that it has come from the account of the person names on the cheque. Has been so for yonks.0
