No payslip booklet or the letter - I can't pay online

I've got the money ready to pay the taxman by the end of the month. I was hoping to do this all online this evening. I haven't received any information that confirms which of the two accounts I need to pay my money into. The HMRC website states:
"to pay your PAYE by Internet, telephone banking or BACS Direct Credit you will need HMRC’s bank account details. Please refer to your payslip booklet or the letter sent in place of a booklet to check which HMRC Accounts Office is relevant for you"
At the weekend I phoned the helpline asking for a payslip as at that time, I planned to pay the bill at the post office as I have done in previous years. The person I spoke with said time was too short for them to send out a payslip (it takes 10 days) and suggested I pay online. He obviously didn't say I needed a reference number

So, the money is sitting in an account ready to be transferred, but I cannot do this withiout the payslip reference number.

Has ANYONE got any idea how I can go forward with this so I don't get a fine at the end of the month. I'm getting a bit stressed by it all.

Please help if you can. Thank you.

If you are talking about paying tax due for your self assessment just write a cheque to H M Revenue & Customs for the amount you owe. Write your national insurance number on the back also. Write a cover letter (also containing your national insurance number, full name and address) explaining what the amount is for. I would show speceifically how much is for the balance on account for the 07-08 year and how much is for the first payment on account for 08-09. Explain that you are waiting for a UTR to enable you to file online. If you pay all tax due but do not manage to file before the deadline on the 31st Jan, I believe the penalty will be the lesser of 100 quid or the amount you owe and if you owe nothing then it will be nothing.

I would also fill out a paper return and a reasonable excuse form for not being able to file online and hand this in on the 31st (as in given in by hand). The revenue may reject the excuse but its worth a try.

If you know how much you owe ... then presumably you have an SA Statement? At the bottom of which is a pink(ish) payslip ...... which is what you need. And the reverse of the Statement lists all the payment options.

The reference (UTR) is "nnnnnnnnnnK" on the Statement and payslip - where "n" is numeric (x 10)). And it's SA you're talking about (?) - very different to PAYE. SA is held on a singular database ...... so it goes to Shipley if in doubt.

I should have given more information in my first message, sorry.

The tax due is for self-assessment for work completed in 2007/08. I have a UTR and completed my tax return online in November 2008. The online tax return calculated the sum that I need to pay. I have not got a SA statement from this, just an online reference number (32 digits long and a mix of numbers and letters) so there's no paying in slip either.

Although I have my UTR, I didn't know the office to which I need to create the direct debit to send my payment - the HMRC website gives two options and says to check your payment slip (which I don't have) to confirm which office is to receive payment.

I hope that clarifies the situation. I'm sorry for not being clearer before that I've already got a UTR and submitted my tax return online.

Does this additional information make the advice you've given any different. I just find it really odd that I haven't got a payslip or similar.

You don't need a letter - cheque addressed to Shipley (Freepost) and with the UTR clearly on the back will suffice.

HMRC have just released Direct Debit for one-off payments (needs 5 days to set up the Mandate). I'm suitably amazed if that requires you to specify which office .... as the SA database is a unified structure despite the records do have Cumbernauld or Shipley associations. But cheques / BACS will work if targetted at either office notwithstanding your nominal 'home' Accounts Office.

  • I spoke to the tax office this morning and they confirmed the tax office for this area is Cumbernaud. It would appear therefore, that Shipley isn't totally focussed on self-assessment claims, such as mine.

This might help - http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/payinghmrc/selfassessment.htm#4 = It has details of HMRC's account to make payments via the internet or telephone banking.

All payments now go to Shipley whether your office is Cumbernauld or Shipley, there are 2 machines there one for each 'office', but these are only used for payments with a payslip. Any cheque that goes in without a payslip is dealt with by a person so would still go to the right tax payers account, as long as your UTR was on there.:rotfl:

Both offices handle payments and queries for PAYE / Corporation Tax / ACT etc ..... as well as SA. But Shipley now handles all cheque payments (the address is Bradford - for both) - hence my note. And, for SA, it doesn't matter how they process it, as it's a unified database.

But for eg PAYE they would need to ensure that any type of payment is processed into the correct database as they remain discrete for the Shipley (London / South / Wales / NI) and Cumberbauld (rest of UK) geographical areas.

When you log on to SA online, can you not pay direct from there? Sorry, I can't remember what I did last year, but I paid online directly from the HMRC site and not via my own online banking.

Try following the links from your SA account, online. On the first page of the summary, it says "How to pay".

    Sorry if you've done this!

  • I've just set up a Direct Debit to pay my tax, due next week.

Log on to SA Online, from the menu on the left select "Direct Debit Payment" and follow the instructions. The reference number, when it prompts you, is your UTR (make a note of it from the SA Online home page, after you log on) followed by K.
