How much to have a Macerator fitted?

My dad has had a plumber around today as he had a blocked toilet which apparently is due to his macerator packing up. Plumber is quoting £500 ish to replace and fit - anyone know if this is reasonable.

Have found we can buy one from B&Q for about £300 and dad would get 10% discount as he is an OAP so basically is £200 reasonable for fitting?

not if all the workings are allready there. the only issue would be the waste out. it might need readjusting. £100 tops if everything is there.

Is it just a blockage caused by something being put into the toilet that shouldn't have been? i.e. something other than human waste and toilet paper?

If so the blockage can be removed, messy job but not as expensive as the plumber has quoted to fit a new one.

We had a macerator toilet at a previous house which got blocked because my daughter flushed a tampon despite being told not to, of course she denied it until her dad showed her the evidence  . Once the blockage was removed it worked fine again.
  • I was unfortunate enough to have to clean one over the xmas holidays when someone put a baby wipe in the toilet. There's not much to break in there, unless someone put something like a metal object inside) and it most likely can be cleaned. Its about an hour's job, most of the time spent keeping one's hands clean (get a few pairs of heavyweight rubber gloves). Make sure it is electrically isolated before starting work.

The plumber told my dad that the electrics had packed up and he needed a new one. Not quite sure how likely this is but I can confirm that there is nothing other than human waste or toilet paper ever flushed down that loo.
