Zone Alarm has multiplied renewal question

Options
I have a 2 year old Dell Pentium 4 PC with Win XP. I have Norton AV 2002 regularly updated, Zone Alarm Pro and I also run Spybot S and D and Ad-aware Pro about once a week.

I had ZA free version for years and got persuaded to the paid for Pro version. It updates itself regularly and runs in the background with no input from me.- to be honest ZAP is not something I feel in control of. I like it as a firewall.

ZAP now needs renewing and I see that as well as the firewall there is an ad-blocker and spyware detector and it recently started running an AV check too.. I don't remember adding these bits as I already have these on Ad-aware (paid for) and AV on Norton. I assume they were downloaded as automatic updates.

I've always heard it is not wise to have 2 AV checkers on one PC. Should I just leave ZAP to do everything and discontinue Ad-Aware and NAV? I'm comfortable with NAV as the website is easier to navigate than ZA but realise they too want to me to have a full security suite rather than AV on its own.

Grateful for any advice.

Rachel

  • Are you sure its not just checking the status of your Anti Virus software?
The later versions of ZA Pro check whether your Anti Virus software is up to date, ZA Pro does not contain an anti-virus scanner. If it is actually an anti-virus scanner then you have ZoneAlarm Internet Security and not ZoneAlarm Pro.
Also the spyware checker is normal in ZA Pro and ZA IS. I'd suggest you also keep Adaware as well, (2 spyware sweepers are better than one!)

It is ZAPro that I have. Looking at the renewal page again it does appear to scan email - see below, but you are right that is not scanning the PC.

I think I'll renew the ZAP and go back to the free version of Ad-aware when my AD-aware PRO runs out.

    Thanks

    "Essential Email Security
Quarantining suspicious attachments helps defend against unknown viruses; automatically halting outbound messages keeps you from accidentally infecting other computers.

Inbound MailSafe automatically quarantines suspicious email attachments, preventing them from auto-launching or being opened by accident.
Outbound MailSafe automatically monitors outgoing email and halts messages with potential viruses before they're transmitted. Prevents worms and viruses from sending infected emails to everyone in your address book. "

    Hi Rachel,

This is a long shot but you dont use Pipex for your internet provider?

They do a yearly rate of £5.88 for ZoneAlarm with Antivirus but it is as easy as un ticking a box to turn the AV off if you dont need it?

I don't at the moment use Pipex but it is one of those ISPs I am looking at for a future change to Broadband.

    Thanks
