Does anyone know how to go about applying for masters and PHD funding? I was wondering if I could appeal to my local council or something? I need funding for a PHD in Psycholinguistics and don't know of many places which could offer me support.
Can anybody help?
Thanks

Local Authorities don't fund PhDs. You will need to contact the department you are planning to study in. Once you have accepted an offer from them, they can forward an application to the relevant research council. I'm not sure which remit your subject falls into, but it will be one of these:

The funding mechanisms have changed as of this year for some (perhaps all?) research funding from the research councils. They have introduced quotas for most (but, I think, not all) universities, so effectively it is the university or department which decides whether you receive this funding, rather than the research council itself (though I believe the research council still has the right to veto any decision). Assuming that the department you are thinking of applying to is subject to this new system, it is worth finding out how many studentships they can offer each year, and what the anticipated competition is.
In addition there are sometimes departmental or university scholarships which are separate from research council scholarships. They usually absorb good students who get turned down for research council funding, though it's all very subject dependent. In my field (Arts and Humanities) it's very hard for postgraduates to secure funding, but my cousin is a lecturer in an engineering department, and they often struggle to give their scholarships away.3-6 Month Emergency Fund #14: £9000 / £10,0000 -
