Podcast BBC Streaming Audio

Options
Hi there,

I'm trying to save/record streaming audio, specifically, the "Listen Again" programs, from the BBC website. I want these programs as a podcast on my mp3 player so I can listen to the ones I've missed at my leisure.

I believe the format the BBC use is Real Audio, altho i'm sure somebody can clarify.

Any specific bits of software that can perform such a function?

Thanks

As far as I know there is no really convenient way to download the full choice of Listen Again.

The compromise is basically a 2 step process, each is a freeware (or maybe adware) program. Step 1 saves the broadcast at 3x normal speed, Step 2 converts it to MP3.

If you have a soundblaster live card then you can use the software bundle that comes with it . Use the recorder software section and just use the "record what u hear" option.

If u do not have this then a good shareware package is "Total Recorder " currently in version 5.2 I think and is fairly cheap. This will do a similar job in which u just record what you would normally hear. Ie you can use it in conjunction with Real Player.

As for freeware options I do not know as it has been nearly a year since I last looked into this problem.

  • Thanks for those suggestions.

@crossley....for some reason, the BBC link you provided doesn't work for me.

@buglaw....I will try what's been discussed in that other thread, looks fairly promising.

@jpe....I don't have a soundblaster card, but if all else fails, then I guess the shareware program you mentioned is the way forward.

    Any other ideas appreciated.
  • You can download Real Media and Window Media streams quite easily to your hard drive, the best piece of software out there at the moment is called RM/WM Recorder.

Take a look here for more information:
    http://all-streaming-media.com/record-video-stream/record-streaming-video-windows-media-and-real-video.htm

To convert RM files to mp3 you need the older version of Streambox Ripper.

Are you right-clicking on the "Listen" icon with the little loudspeaker pic?
Then you select "Download Usng Flashget".

Occasionally the BBC fails to post the audio properly - then you will get a tiny file. I have emailed them to fix one or two like this in the past & they did it. Try a few more.
  • For Mac users, I'd strongly recommend Audio Hijack, one of the best programs of its class that I've seen. I've happily been recording Desert Island Discs and Radio 5 programs without a hitch for months. Nice touches: the ability to post-process it (ie save as an MP3 in iTunes), and the fact it isolates sound from the app its hijacking, so if your computer beeps, it doesn't pick up the sound.

Is Total Recorder one of those that records all Windows sounds including mouse clicks? If there is an all-in-one program that avoids the Windows sounds by getting the raw file then converting it, please let this thread know!
