Redundant and deciding if JSA is worth the effort-some questions?

HI was made redundant last Friday after 6 years. Forth time redundant but have only claimed dole twice. Had a bad experience with JSA last time in 97 and was trying not to sign on. Been to local temp agencies but they wont even register anybody as they have little work and loads of temps, depressing!
My wife works full time but is in a DMP so has little spare money I have some redundancy and savings but only a few k.
If I do bite the bullet and claim JSA apart from the £60 pw can I also claim money to pay my half of the mortgage, and get our council tax halfed? Is this possible straight away.
I last signed of for a few months in 1997 and it was a awful experience. They failed to pay me until just before I signed off and the staff were awful, treated everybody as if they were spongers. Originally when I signed on fora while in 1992 if you worked a week or a few days temping you just told them and they deducted the money. I tried this in 97 and was told I had to sign off even if I just worked a week and go through the whole process again, is this still the case? The months dole of £240 will just pay my credit cards minimum payments and some food, that's it! Any advice appreciated.

Afraid my experience of getting JSA recently was just as you have described. But had to sign on to get mortgage insurance paid out, and would never had let £240.00 owed to me, through all those contributions i'd paid, slip away.
I managed to get into the swing of it though. Just grit your teeth and get down there as soon as possible. You may just get fortunate this time around and have a pleasant experienceI learned that courage was not the absence of fear, but the triumph over it. The brave man is not he who does not feel afraid, but he who conquers that fear.0 -
Its not a thought that fills me with joy but suppose Ill have to grin and bear it. It will be a different office than last time, hopefully better people? However I will take joy at bumping up this awful governments figures!

As your wife works full time you will not receive assistance with your mortgage. Your eligibility for CTB will depend on the total household income.Gone ... or have I?0

Hi, My OH is in the same position, basically it depends on what you can do for work vs JSA.
My OH could get some contract work, not enough to pay the bills, but a bit that would help. However if he erns say £100 a week, then he would not be entitled to JSA.
Example
JSA £60.50
Temp work/contract work £50.00
Would end up being £50 - £5 allowed to earn = £45 deducted from JSA and a payment of £15.50!
My OH thinks this is just not worth it at the moment and to be honest feels let down and confused.
As for CTB, i looked on line last night and you may be eligable, based on household income, however i'm still in the minefield of that one myself!
We have been told that after 6 months contribution based JSA, as i work he will be entitled to nothing.Looking forward to Christmas 2009!!:santa2::snow_laug:santa2:0 -
Just found this , Answers previuos question
see
http://www.berr.gov.uk/whatwedo/employment/employment-legislation/employment-guidance/page33157.html
0.5 week's pay for each full year of service where age during year less than 22
1.0 week's pay for each full year of service where age during year is 22 or above, but less than 41
1.5 weeks' pay for each full year of service where age during year is 41+0 -
re last , pay is limited to £330 per week government maximum unless the company has a private redundancy policy0

We are in the same situation and have decided that dh will not sign on. He can pick up some freelance work and even the most minor of jobs will pay more than 60 a week. We only ever had problems in the past. We do not qualify for CTB or help with mortgage since I earn too much. We will just struggle on...0

HI my signing on person is fine with me and then i got someone else whilst they where away who was horrid, but I thought to myself 'i could do your job and dont you look down on me' i was fuming but remained calm, i rang up to complain afterwards because its not like i dont want a job and ive done a course were ive gained 12 more qualifications and job centre are actually recruiting at the moment in my area. Go and get the forms you need from town hall for ctb and hb (one stop shop) and make sure you take everything you need with you when you go, because it might delay the decision, it takes about 10 working days any how, I would go in person to make sure nothing got lost in the post. keep your chin up, maybe you should see if you can get a tax refund look on your P45, you wont get it yet but knowing that that money maybe coming in will boost morale up.0

By signing on you also get credits for N. I contributions which is an important consideration.0
