in Credit cards
I have just had the opportunity to pay a good chunk of my credit card off, so I went to there website and logged onto my account. After about half an hour searching I finally found a link enabling me to make a 'one off payment' from my card. I clicked it and was taken to another page, where I had to select the 'source' and / or 'destination' of the amount in question. I Filled this in and was imediately taken back to my balance, which remained unchanged!
After a lot of messing around I got fed up so finally decided to ring egg themselves to try and pay over the phone. The girl seemed confused that I couldn't pay anything off online so she tried to make the payment for me. Again the payment was refused, she told me it could be a problem with my bank, and to sort it out with them. I told her it couldn't have been as it seemed as if egg was not letting me get as far as to entering an amount or confirming the transaction! After a bit of persistance she went away. When she came back she suggested (and note that she wasn't entirly sure) that the problem could be that I hadn't activated a replacement Egg card I received about a month ago, and that I should get the card now and re-activate it so that we could try again!
When I suggested that I couldn't locate the card at this moment and that I just wanted to pay off an amount of my debit card she said that nothing could be done until I activate the current c/card.
Now because I destroyed my new card ( which I didn't tell her about) I can't activate it (apparently they don't know my new card no.) so I can't pay off my current balance  I now have to wait for a replacement, activate that and then I might be able to make my payment
Is this a typical strategy cc companies use when their customers arn't spending money from their accounts? What can I do to bypass all this nonsense, isn't egg behaving unlawfully?
EDITED: to make it a little clearer!

Is it your debit card on the current account that has not been activated?
If so you can just pay off your Egg card by BACS transfer from your current account. You need to find the collection account (on the Egg site -- see help with moving money), and quote your 16 digit Egg credit card number as the reference. Either setup the BACS payment online (if you bank online) or go into your branch and ask them to do it for you.
Edit:
The Egg account numbers are:
sort code 40-02-50, account number 01071181 for Egg Card (the green card).
sort code 40-02-50, account number 11202073 for Egg Money card OR Egg Blue card
But please visit site to confirm these for yourself.0 -
Hi David no it is my Egg card that is not activated! I have a set dd coming out of my current account to pay a monthly fixed rate (which, incidently I am now unable to change this either!) off my egg card. my current account and debit card are fine!
I can't quote any egg credit card number as neither I nor egg know this since I threw my replacement card away before activating it!
I guess to cut a long story short I am completely unable to pay off my cc balance until I have activated a replacement card which is due to arrive in 5 working days :mad:0 -
correct me if I have missed something but any payments that I make on my Egg Card does not always show up immediate on my balance. Its a couple of days before I can see it on my balance!!!
Also, dont see why it took ages to find the "one off payment link", its on the left side of the page!!! You sure you logged into the genuine Egg page???
Debt at highest (November 2005) = £35,856
Debt currently (August 2006) = £20,790

Interim goal = £23,400 (Target: February 2006, Missed but acheived May 2006)
2nd Interim Goal = £15,000, Target October 2006
Debt Free Date = February 2008 BUT I'M GOING TO BE TRYING FOR SOONER!!!

But when I proceed from the 'one off payment' page I don't have any options to enable me to select a payment method! No confirmation, nothing - it just sends me back to my egg balance!nmiah786 wrote:Also, dont see why it took ages to find the "one off payment link", its on the left side of the page!!! The only thing that I can see on my menu that could lead me to this option is 'mainainance', which I am unable to select!
This is definately a fault with Egg, I wouldn't mind but I have been paying them interest for some time now on the outstanding balance and they have obviously gotton too use to it because now they won't let me pay it off using ANY method, until I activate a new card   :mad:0 -
I concur with this, I tried to transfer money from my bank account to my Egg account and you end up going round in circles on the Egg site. In the end I gave up and paid by Bacs but I think there is a fault with the site.
I thought about reporting the problem but you know you will end up talking for half an hour to some operator who doesn't understand, because they have never used the system, and treats you like an idiot!!

You can make payments onto any card activated or not. The only thing you can't do is use the card when it hasn't been activated. I would assume you have been making the m,inimum payment each month at least whilst not activating the card?
Unless you had a card lost stolen your card number - in the case of CC should remain the same as this is in fact your account number.
Egg should have your details of your account and any cards held on there as there system should hold this info. Due to DP they are unable to read out your card number to you over the phone anyway (The a/c number should appear on your statement anyway?)
Like David78 said earlier, you can pay by BACS - 3 day transfer normally just making sure you include your a/c number. It's nice to be nutty but's more important to be nice0 -
BACS is not an option as the OP states they dont know the card number. If you send without the card number the payment will simply be held inlimbo in the aggregate account for a few days, as your card number is the reference neccesary to divert it to your card.
If your replacement card was because you had lost or had the old one stolen then the new card will have a different number, if it was just the renewal it will be exactly the same. It also wont need activating if it is a renewal as it is essentially the same card you have before.
And just to confirm that they can see your card number on their screen quite clearly but aren't allowed to tell you what it is if it is a new/replacement card as this info is neccesary to activate it.0 -
If you log into the site and your 'recent transactions' page - you'll find your card number there. Alternatively you can get the card number off your last statement, also found on the website.
I had a similar problem trying to set up 'addresses' for payment. There must've been a glitch somewhere or I'd not added the full details required to one of the 'payees' I'd set up and it kept refusing to make the payment. All sorted out now and it was my own fault.
I can understand the OP's frustration but there does seem to be a *slight* edge to the tone adopted by them in their first post?
The sort codes/account numbers are available on the Egg site and the card number available from various locations on the secure site too. There is no reason for not completing a BACS payment to the account.

Hi, thanks for all the replies, just to clear things up they originally sent me the replacement card in preperation for 'chip n pin'. This is the card that I discarded. It did require activation which I obviously didn't perform.
I think I am going to play this one safe for now and wait for the new card to arrive - I don't want to chance any of my money ending up in limbo, and seeing what I have experienced with Egg customer services that is exactly where it would be heading!

I think, as a security measure, egg have a limit on the amount that you can repay as a one off lump sum payment.
It happened to me a few months back and I seem to remember having to make several smaller payments over a number of days.2014 Target;
To overpay CC by £1,000.
Overpayment to date : £310
