Please help with tax credits

I am currently employed by rbs(!!!!)and my stat sick pay is due to finish in a couple of weeks so I will have no salary but still employed by rbs group. Does anyone know how this will effect my tax credits award.
Can I claim any benefits. I will not be fit for work for another 3 months at least but don't want hand in my notice cos I want to work.
Thanks

When your SSP ends you may be able to apply for ESA.

I know it used to be a move onto IB, but don't know the full rules for ESA However, when I moved from SSP (and company sick pay) to IB, Tax Credits still classed me as employed -- but as I was on considerably less 'pay' my Tax Credits went up (and we actually became entitled to WTC as well as CTC)

  • Thanks CW, what is ESA though. I currently get WTC and CT, hubby is SE so total income is usually about 15k anyway. Do I have to tell them that my ssp is due to stop.

    ESA info is here

I only thought to call TC and let them know about the change from SSP to IB as it co-incided with the company sick pay ending. This meant a much lower estimated income for the tax year, so I knew it was likely to mean an increase in CTC

Just to add, for Working Tax Credit, you continue to be counted in work whilst you get SSP but as soon as it ends and you move to something else (such as ESA) you are no longer counted as in remunerative work therefore unless your partner qualifies for WTC your WTC entitlement will cease.

Of course CTC will continue, and you may get an increase if your income is likely to be lower this year. Be very careful when estimating a fall in income, if it happens to rise again, even slightly, it is likely you will have an overpayment.

  • Icequeen1 is correct. After 28 weeks of sick leave (usually when the SSP ends) you are no longer classed as working for tax credit purposes.

As cw18 said, you may be able to claim ESA (formerly Incapacity Benefit).
  • Thanks everyone for your help. I will look into all of this as soon as i can.

you only get ctc with ib or the new equivalent not wtc. But seeing as hubby is working that won't apply with you. If you inform wtc of change of circumstances they will no doubt be able to re-calculate, just remember to get in touch with them when you do start back work and you should be ok
