OOh, and finally tracked down why my fridge was stinky...I had scrubbed/disinfected/emptied and it still smelt. Got on t'internet, read up on how fridges work, pulled it out of its spec, turned it round and hey presto-an evaporation plate above compressor filled with manky, smelly water...so it was coming from the outside back of fridge! Techie is what my mates call me!!

    afternoon all. Back from work.

Felt very rough this morning - combination of the cold, working last night and felt a bit rough as TOTM, but once at work, felt better and just back to snivelling a bit as my biggest ailment!

Went to get Charlie and there was a note from my ex saying he has to take a 20% pay cut (he is a teacher, but at a private school) and he is now panicking.

However, he will 'only' be on 26k after the deductions  and I have left a note saying I will help him do a new budget as he has lots of fat to trim from his monthly outgoings.

I'm going to give him a very stern talking to, but I doubt it will go in. He has CC debt of around 11K and rising. 15 months ago I helped him get it all onto 0% for 12 months and said it was the opportunity to change his lifestyle and reduce it. He didn't and it's now all on various rates, he can't get it back on 0% and it's gone up rather than down. He puts all his food and petrol on his CC's.

He pays silly things like £12 to Barclays for their Additions account - ie for nothing. He pays £7 a month to Currys for extra warranty on the new TV he bought last year - ie for nothing. His fridge and cupboards, whilst not bursting at the seams, are full of Walkers, Heinz, Cathedral City, Tesco Finest etc and his freezer is full of ready meals. He spends £1.50 on bread and uses 1 slice and chucks the rest!!!

He will say that he has no vices other than wine and beer - but it's Grolsch/individual bottles of branded ale and he can't ever do without a bottle of wine open - every night.
He is paying £55 a month life insurance  - he's single with no dependents! He took it out when we split because the guy at the bank persuaded him to.......

I'm going to basically show him how much he can save (he's paying £32 a month on house insurance - I'm paying £16 for a similar property!) and advise him how to go about it.

He has around 2.5k in bank charges pending waiting for the stay to be lifted but that isn't guaranteed to happen soon. If he is careful,he will have some money leftover whenhis insurance claim is sorted, although last weekend I said 'whatever you have left - pay off some of your CC' his reply ' no, I think I'm going to have the boarded over fireplace in the bedroom opened up as a feature in the room'................

I'm going to also tell him that he has to be positive about it, although I know it will be 'oh, this is terrible, I can't survive on £1600 a month, I'll have to sell the house' but he has to have his LBM and it just highlights one of the major reasons we split.

I know he has some savings (but not much I guess) and I'm going to say - use it to pay off your CC's as you get les APR on the savings than your APR onyour CC's and then just save £25 a month for car tax and MOT. Doubt he will though.

Oh dear BB, it sounds like he's a real head in the sand kind of guy. Like they say, you can lead a horse to water...
