I had to pay 150 quid because theyd spent so long looking for me at the address where my partner and i lived. Oh my heart bleeds.....
I don’t think that’s true. They can basically only charge you for certain things when recovering council tax. They will tell you otherwise of course as the charges are their wages.
If you don’t let them in, they can charge £24 for the first visit and £18 for the second*. Nothing at all after that. They will tell you differently of course! They will probably say they will charge you every visit and for a recovery van etc. It’s all not true.
If you let them in (asking to come in to use phone or deception as starsinmycrown says) then you are liable to different expensive charges.
They will use lots of legal terms to baffle you, they will use the fact that you don’t know the law to their advantage, see starsinmycrown’s post for example.
*They will probably charge you for these 2 visits regardless of ever coming anywhere near your house.0 -

Usual rubbish! Tomorrow (today
) call the council and find out how much the liability order is for. The quoted price from Newlyn might include charges so is not the figure that you actually owe.
Are you the only adult in the house? Do you get a lone person council tax discount?0 -
Hi
Yes im the only adult, one child and i do get single person discount, not that u would notice, my tax is still high
I was up till late doing letters which i got help for from a link someone kindly put.
I am going down to council this morning to hand the letter in and will send one off to Newlyn to
thanks to everyone for their support0 -

You have received some great answers here which have answered a lot of your questions. From dealing with over 6,000 bailiff queries I can say the following:
You will NOT be sent to prison.
The bailiff will NOT accept £10 per month.
The bailiff WILL try to put a LEVY on your car.
Regarding the arrears, it is actually not the bailiff who will insist on the debt being paid quickly, it is the council who nearly always insist that the debt is repaid within the current tax year. I am sorry to say that you will be expected to increase your repayment to at least £100 per month. This offer MAY work.
You MUST contact the council to confirm the amount of the Liability Order. This is because many bailiffs companies do not tell the truth about the outstanding amount and add at least 2 visits to the account (if not more).
Make sure that you do NOT have a car parked outside of your house.
The most important thing to do is that you MUST write to advise the bailiff company that you will not allow them into your home and outlining what payment you can make.
I have sent you a pm with details of our website and the password to download template letters.
Finally, if the bailiff cannot come into your home or levy on a car, he will eventually return the debt back to the council as Nulla Bono (no goods on which to levy).0 -
Hi

Do as Herbie says for now hun, go out tomorrow if it's too much for you. Don't believe anything they say and don't let them in! I think you can call the police if they won't leave, but someone like Herbie will be able to tell you for sure. Come online if the bailiff comes round and you are worried - title your thread "Bailiffs here now I am really scared!" and someone will answer. Bump your thread if it gets lost.
Keep all your records of who you have spoken to at the council and when. Also of when the bailiffs have called you, and anything they say if they do come over. Then you can make a complaint later for your disgraceful treatment.
A guardian angel for you

I am not sure if I am doing this site correctly, but before I start telling you what happened to me in the last couple of days, could someone please let me know that I am not replying to a query?0

The council can take it back, the lady might not know it. They don't like to as they want the cash quick, which bailiffs generally do.
If you can pay your council online pay them direct, they won't stop you. You can then use it as evidence of your willing to pay.
With any discount you get for benefit I'm sure you will be able to sort the matter. If you are dealing with the council don't get angry, stroppy or sarcy (which I usually do!) and a few tears never hurt!
Also speaking to a councilor can help get things moving as council officers (the workers) don't like councilors getting involed!
And Herbie is the master of bailiff advice!0 -
I sent my councilor an email last nite and he contacted me first thing this morning saying he is dealing with it urgently.
I did keep very calm this morning, yes i can be very sarcy to! The council have done nothing but make mistakes since iv been off work sick.
The tears can flow like a river at the moment, iv had alot of upset recently so anything small starts me off!
thanks roughyed and everyone for replying. I feel better knowing i got people on here for support0
