Clothes Rack Drying Tips

Hi,

Hope this is the right place for this. But does anyone have any tips on drying clothes on a clothes rack / horse for example having a window open or keeping them closed, keeping the rack in your bedroom or bathroom. Our clothes seem to take a while to dry on them and we don't really want to put our electric heaters on to keep our bills down.

Thanks for any help!

  • hi the only tip i have is to make sure you turn them regularly and i would try to keep a window open because drying clothes inside can lead to condensation &mold .

I too would stress keeping a window open. I dried clothes during the winter on an airer indoors for the last 3 years. This has casued me serious damp/mould problems to the walls in that room. And is now taking a lot of effort to get rid of it.

I put my clothes airer on the landing as the heat from downstairs comes up and dry's really fast.
I fill it first thing in the morning and leave it all day until bedtime when I take all the dry off, sometimes I put another lot on and push it into the doorway of the spare room ( just so we dont bump into it in the night when visiting the loo.

I have only been doing this for a few weeks as a result of my electric direct debit going up to £80 pm from £45.
It must have saved me a fortune by now and I am chuffed.
I do open the window but I find the heat our house is enough to dry the clothes without condensation, obviously I will keep an eye on it though..

Instead of draping everything over the airer - hang shirts/jumpers etc on hangers first. You can also use "over the door hooks", like those below, to hang on the back of your airing cupboard door. Clothes dry much faster.

Buy an airer large enough that you can drape clothes over two horizontal supports, so there is an air gap between. Also one which will allow you to hang stuff like thick sweaters or jeans so they get the best air flow.

If it's warm in the room, don't open the windows the whole time just for half an hour here and there to clear the damp from the air. You might try a dehumidifier to help the clothes dry quicker - not as expensive to run as heating.

I have this airer and it's really sturdy, holds two loads easily, needs little floor space and folds away next to my wardrobe:

i have 2 radiator airers that have 4 rows spaced out on them, they are on the rads in the spare room, big things like shirts i hang on hangers (saves on ironing too) and jeans go on the rad in my bedroom which always has the window ajar

seems to dry everything fine and i dont get a condensation etc
When you know better you do better

    What a brilliantly simple idea:T

I'd like to add to the other tips - Only wash and dry one load a day inside and try and do it first thing in the morning when all the toing and froing should provide enough airflow to minimise risks of condensation.
