Spag bog is a good one...i drain all the meat fat off after browning using a sieve and wipe round my cooking pot with paper towel to take away remaining fat. I then return to cooking pot adding passatta or a tin of chopped toms and then i add veg. I grate carrot in and put in a chopped onion and mixed herbs. You can put in what veg you want..i usually stick in left over cooked veg from our sunday roasts-you can add it from frozen.

My dh won't eat the broad beans that i grow down my allotment so i cook them in a pan then puree them before adding to my spag bog and he has never noticed.

It's amazing what you can 'pad' meals out with that your family don't know anything about....try adding a spoon of prridge oats and lentils too...lovely and healthy

Hi there,Quorn mince and turkey mince are low in calories and you can blitz veg to hide in it so to speak, agree with the poster who says about soup before main meal. How bout exercise to,that will help shift the pounds.Changing rice, pasta to wholemeal brands.Chicken,fish.Plenty of the vegetables he will eat can take up a good sized portion of the plate, hth

He sounds like my eldest daughter when she was a toddler LOL- loved the taste of veg but only if it was hidden and she didnt have to chew it! (she is a good eater now aged 8 so there is hope for your hubby!)

Make a big batch of a "tomatoe" sauce and put in all sorts of veg, onion, celery, tomatoes, carrots, parsnips, peas etc and just blend it to a smooth consistency and freeze. It can be used as a base for anything from stews, spag bol, chilli, soups and sauces for meatballs ! YUM !

I agree with daisy - change the mince to turkey - it's less fatty and you won't notice. Stick a couple of oxo cubes in it for the beefy taste.

Don't have snacky food in the house, go to semi-skimmed milk rather than full fat, spreads rather than butter, increase fish intake over meat, use medium sliced rather than thick sliced bread if you buy it, wholemeal rather than white for bread and pasta.

If he will always go back for seconds regardless, maybe reduce the portion size of the first portion. I have been known to go out and buy smaller plates because a former partner would just fill a plate regardless of the size.

Does he eat very quickly? I just wondered if he doesn't do chewy food - sometimes we eat far more than we would by bolting it (I'm terribly guilty of this as I eat on the run all the time). A glass of water on the table can help too :)

I also find mashing works wonders - mixed swede and potato and carrot mash is really nice :) If you make your own burgers you can sneak in all sorts (grated carrot, mashed beans and onion for example) with the meat. Casseroles can be padded with lentils, beans and liquidised veg :)

    best of luck, cel x

Thanks for the ideas - I think his problems come from his mum (sadly passed on now). She couldn't be bothered with the whole weaning process and let him and his sister eat what they wanted. I'm going to set up a meal plan (and confiscate his bank card when he's at work - vending machine is bad!!!)

Is most veg okay to freeze?

I've tried Quorn mince before and TBH i didn't like it but people have said it tastes better mixed with something. Is that true?

The only soups that I can make are scotch broth and lentil lol.

ETA: Neither of us eat fish unfortunatley. And the milk we have is semi - skimmed (can't stand full fat milk) I'll just need to hide the blue stuff when the bairn starts drinking it!!

How to I make my own burgers? Is it easy?

We also go through LOADS of cheese - I think this is having an effect too!

in terms of mince, I keep dried defatted soya mince in and add this to bulk out red meat mince mixtures. I find adding quorn mince or turkey mince changes the taste and colour way too much for me and mine, although they work well for some. Have you tried looking at this from a slightly different angle? You could try starting with what OH eats now, and slowly tweak it. If he only sees very slight changes to his current lifestyle he is more likely to go with it rather than have sudden changes to his food's taste and texture.
  • Hi my OH isnt overweight but doesnt eat veg either. I add grated veg to as many meals as possible, this is great for kids too. Courgette, carrot, squash and sweet potato grate well and breakdown into almost unrecognisable pieces. Leeks and onion chopped small cook down well too. These veg can be added to pasta sauces, shepherds pie, stews, casseroles, spag bol, hm pies etc.

Also think about "junk" food that you can make yourself, ie hm chicken nuggets, burgers, pizza etc. If you make some pasta sauce with veg in this can be turned into a really healthy pizza with more veg on top.

If you introduce lots of new foods AND start adding loads of veg it isnt going to work. Start with things he likes and adapt these first.

You say he doesnt like fish but what about getting some cod fillets, cutting them into chunks, dipping into eggs and breadcrumbs then baking with some oven chips and veg or beans? There are loads of possibilities once you get started.
