ETA: does anyone use the leaves off a cauli? I thought I might put those in my bag too.
Yes, I add it to the cauli pan near the end of cooking. I think it lifts a cauliflower cheese.
If you are lucky enough to get a really leafy cauli, you can have the greens and cauli seperate, 2 lots of veg for the price of one! :money:
Mind you I am not using the stems of the leaves...may think on that.Pay off as much as you can in 2012 challenge No. 64: 328.75/2,5000 -
Instead of butter/spread on sandwiches, use a thin spreading of WW salad cream (or similar) to 'waterproof the bread'.
I learnt this trick from Slimming World and now prefer the taste.0 -
Not the most mse but healthy, I use those frylight sprays instead of oil and none at all for browning mince etc. With onions, I soften them in the microwave before frying, speeds it up.
I bought a frylight spray, and when it was finished, just opened it and put normal oil in it.
The way I see it you are still really really reducing the oil you use, and I think it's about the same as the frylight, but a lot cheaper! We've had the bottle for a while now. When our last one broke, we just pinched an empty bottle from my parents (they buy new ones when it runs out!)0 -
Two tips from me...
Firstly, grate a raw potato into soups/casseroles to thicken it up nicely (and get the excellent benefits of potatoes into your soup/casserole)
Second, sneak loads of veggies into tuna mayonnaise (red onion, chilli and green peppers go together very well indeed!)
Hope that helps0 -
i dont have any problems with my oh and kids eating healthily as they love their veg! i get by the long stalk problem by not making an issue of it and leaving it long when i chop the brocolli up, same with cauli ... so i dont really have any left over stalk (if that makes sense!?)
also, ive never used salt in cooking or on the table so they dont notice its not there.
however, when they were all little i did get them eating ketchup sarnies; nice small wholemeal breadcake with ketchup on each half ... with a small bit of smoked mackerel mashed into the ketchup
they have tried mackerel and werent keen on it, so had a bit of a giggle when i told them their beloved ketchup sarnies actually had mackerel in them :rotfl:wading through the treacle of life!

Thanks for that tip caz. Did you use 100% oil or mix it with water? and any particular oil?0 -

Hiya,
I do as many others have said and tend to add lots of veg into every dish- made a chilli the other week that had grated carrot and parsnip in and it came out really really well.
I also tend to put pulses in pretty much everything- for me more because I try to eat low GI as much as possible ( to help control my diabetes) but we've gotten so used to it that it feels like something is missing if I haven't added some in- I now have a well stocked "pulse cuppboard":D as DH now no longer likes a lot of meals without the pulses ( a real result as before he could quite happily eat steak every day if I let him!)
Another thing I do is for mince dishes- along with the grated veg and pulses I also will add a few handfuls of soya mince into the dish too- stretches the meat, it's a good source of protein, low fat and honestly most people just think it's mince they are eating:D win win for me!
Broccolli stalks have long been used as a stir fry veg in our house thinly sliced and popped into the freezer- then chucked into stir fry when needed YUM!
Will pop back if I can think of anything else I do but hope that helps someone!

Hi, sorry for the late reply!
I just used 100% oil, it's just running out now and has lasted us months, we would normally use loads more oil in that time. I used vegetable oil as that was what we had in the house at the time, and is what we normally use. I got 5 litres of vegetable for £4 at Asda recently, I think it will last us years
I've lost 17lbs in 5 weeks, so it must be helping (fingers crossed I keep losing now!!)0 -
I put water in the fruit juice.
Babies have fruit juice diluted 1 part to 9 parts water (10%) but for my eldest child (age 12) and I it has just continued to be diluted. She likes hers 50/50 now and I like mine 1/3 water to 2/3 juice.
I find 50/50 to be about the most you'd want to water it down to be honest. Beyond that it's not juice-like, it's more like hasn't-washed-up-the-glass. Ick.
My partner doesn't think he likes diluted juice... at 20% water or below he doesn't realise it is.0
