ok, i have just re-read the whole thread and things are clearer now, thanks alot for all the input.

i only mentioned IB JSA in the OP as i didnt really understand the implications.

we have nothing to hide and we have never claimed any benefits, but i dont want to be tied to being "actively seeking work" so dont want to be considered for extra benefits based on that. if my OH can claim them without me being tied to anything then thats fine and they can have my details.

the reasons for this are personal and emotional but as i said, i dont want to discuss it.

our savings will be whatever the redundancy package is plus final pay slip (around 6k). i expected my OH's claim to be £60.50 Con JSA along with our PPI for the mortgage. anything else like IB and CT benefit would be a bonus and what is what i was on here trying to find out about.

on a final note, what qualfies someone for contribution JSA? does 15 years full time on a modest income count?

    thanks everyone for your help.

There should not be problem getting conts based JSA as she has been in regular employment for a long time, but the claim will only last a maximum of 6 months and if she wanted to claim after that it would be income based JSA and you would have to be included in the claim.

When I called on the phone I was asked if the claim was just for me or joint. I said joint as hubby was working and supporting me, however he has had no work since November. But, because I called I was told either person could claim. As mentioned, I did have to give hubbys NI number and date of birth, but other than that they asked for nothing else. I went to the jobcentre and asked for a JSA form and they ask for both parties details, andboth, hubby and I signed it. However when we both went to the interview, I was told, hubby did not have to come and they did not even ask him one question. In fact, he had paid all the contributions and yet they asked me about the kind of work looking for etc..

Yes, the council tax do treat you like criminals. They have been harder work! Even then I think I will be penalised here as my daughter just started work a month ago and only earns £12000 a year. She works in London and her fares are £300 per month let alone her other responsibilites, car tax, phone etc. Yet they will still expect her to pay towards the council tax.

so even after the initial call to JCP you then have to go through a further claim process for TC benefits?

It's a pain, but I believe that Council Tax Benefit claims are handled by your local council, so it's a completely different organisation form JCP.

She'll get contribution based JSA for herself of £60.50 with a top up of income based JSA to 94.95 (your "applicable amount" which is what the law says you need to live on) as I assume she'll be claiming for you both.
    .

I'm not sure that this is a reasonable assumption to make as the OP has clearly stated that s/he claims no benefits. We obviously don't know why this is but to assume that s/he will start claiming now seems inappropriate.

just a quick update for people who have helped on this thread. last week OH applied for a job online for the DWP - a complete change in direction to her previous career.

today she has received an offer to go to the test/interview day - very nerve wracking for her :o

we may be posting later tonight on the jobs thread asking about what she may expect from the day.

    thanks again.
