Is it best to wait for the charges before claiming?

Hi all,

I have a Halifax current account that I use to pay off my Sainsburys credit card in full every month.

There is usually enough money in to clear the credit card but this month I was hit with a whopping £651 credit card bill (after Christmas) and this sent me £59 overdrawn on the 19th Jan until my regular deposit of £300 cleared on the 20th of Jan and put me back in the black.

For this they have issued me the following online letter:
We are writing to tell you that you have gone overdrawn without agreement.
As a result we will take a fee from your account.
Details of the fee you have to pay are shown in the table below.
    Sainsburys M/Card £651.77 Paid item £35.00 3rd February 2009

You will also have to pay an unauthorised overdraft fee of £28.00.
We will take this from your account on the 28th February 2009.
We will also charge you interest on your overdraft.
The unauthorised interest rate will apply to the amount of your overdraft.
A £63 charge!!!!!!

I telephone them to try and get it refunded but, because they already refunded a charge back in July 08, they won't do it.

This is a disgusting amount to be charged and I wondered if there was anything I could do about it?

So...

Can I claim this back?
Do I follow the procedure laid out in the sticky post in this thread?
Should I write to their customer services first?
Is it best to wait until I've been charged before starting the claim procedure etc?

Any advice that anyone can give me would be really appreciated.

Many thanks

John ;-)

  • Yes you can claim them back and you need to read Martin's guide to reclaiming.

Thanks for your response. Much appreciated.

Could you just clarify whether I should write to customer services first asking for the money back? Or would this letter somehow prejudice any future claim I made?
