M.E / C.F.S - what benifits are out there???

Maybe he gets abused by too many shirkers daily, many only interested in claiming benefits rather than doing something positive like using work as a form of therapy. Nothing makes someone feel better than putting in a good days work, and being able to afford to treat oneself - even if its only a tiny treat from their wages!0

You get self esteem and self respect from working. I should know, I've worked for the last 30 years and bought up two children. My kids aren't shirkers either - learnt behaviour. They work hard and will pay a lot of taxes into the economy so people can continue taking and not giving anything back.0 -
thanks to everyone...I have gained some useful info that I will follow up.
Oh and CindyC.....I know (and greatly miss) the benefits of working. Do you really think I choose to have loss of speech, total body muscle aches, temporary paralysis and much more. Do you think I choose to spend my days alone - sometimes not even being able to leave the bed to use the bathroom? My 'treat' is currently hoping for more good days in a week than bad. And if you know of any jobs that I can do with these symptoms (and bear in mind the severity of the ailments changes daily) then PLEASE let me know as I have been looking for 2 years now.
Well done H on your appeal...there is hope for us all yet!!0 -

Due to money problems I worked 7 days a week for 3 years to keep my home, sometimes doing an early shift, going back on a night shift and leaving the night shift to do an early somewhere else. I am now fortunate that I only have to work full time.
I appreciate that a great number of people abuse the system I see it every day, foreigners working and getting WTC, claiming the £500 sure start maternity grant, going off sick to get sick pay, claiming maternity pay after they have gone home to have their baby never to be seen again!
However I am not that shallow that I class all foreigners the same. Same as people on here shouldn't class everyone claiming benefit as fraudsters.
I have M.E. and in 1994 was unable to work for a year, fortunately I am well enough to work now, however I know how debillatating it can be. People post here for advice not abuse and they shouldnt be treated as imbeciles as they are claiming benefits. Nobody knows their situation, as they say "there but for the grace of god go I". So don't criticise when you dont know their story.I love this board, have "virtually" met so many lovely people, people I am honoured to count as friends.

Thanks Becky004...I was starting to feel worse not better! Its nice to know that some people are interested in helping others rather than making rash sweeping statements.
I was very lucky..I used to have a fantastic job that was well paid...so much so that I had to pay 40% tax. Unfortunately this seems a lifetime ago but I know that I will, eventually, get back there. So to the people who think Im scamming all their hard earned tax money....I get the princly sum of 350.00 per month, total. I think my many years of 40% tax should just about cover it dont you...0 -
Keep your chin up Jojo, I know how bad it is. I am 90% better to what I was and only feel symptoms during the winter now but I am able to cope with them. I wish you all the best and a full recovery asap.I love this board, have "virtually" met so many lovely people, people I am honoured to count as friends.

maris_crane wrote:I know a family who claim carers allowance for the mother to look after the 8 year old with mild cerebal palsy, even though he is at mainstream school all day. They get the car tax paid, £260 a month mobility allowance. The husband is on £35000 a year. The wife is 'earning' about £600 from the benefit system .
Yet I also have a friend with an autistic teenage son. Husband works in the week she works weekends and DLA put her through hell to get medium carers allowance, suggested that she was making it up about his behaviour and that he should be drugged at night.
I have a son with dyspraxia, visual impairment and a statement of special educational need yet I do not and will not claim DLA for him. Sure i could get `easy` money yet he/we cope and he only needs a little above the average care for his needs.

Maybe we should bring back the death penalty, have people living below the breadline. With dire poverty comes disease perhaps a nice case of Bubonic Plague, then you can moan that all these people are filling up NHS beds.
You cannot make sweeping comments about benefit claimants, many have a genuine reason for claiming. Many paid their taxes and N.I contributions before becoming ill. Am sure you would accept benefits if you were too unwell to work and were entitled to them. You should not belittle people on here when you don't know their situation.
By the way I claim CTC to enable me to work so I guess I to fall into the category of those you despise.I love this board, have "virtually" met so many lovely people, people I am honoured to count as friends.

I dont think maris crane is knocking genuine claimants. I certainly am not but when people milk the system for every benefit they can get and others with a genuine need get put through the mill. It makes a mockery of the system. If I was to ill to work yes I would claim my entitlement.0
