How long does the system keep you logged in before evicting you? The reason I ask is that yesterday I composed quite a long post, only to find that in the interim I had been logged out and the whole thing lost. As you can imagine this was rather infuriating. I was 'active' because I was typing.
What is the best way round this? Compose externally and copy and paste in? Or are there any settings I could change?

That's a new one to me. I've been logged in to this site for hours without being kicked out.
Perhaps it just happens to those who don't behave....:D0 -

(I don't think I was typing for 30 mins anyway.)0 -
The cookie timeout is 15 minutes - if you haven't been active for 15 minutes then you are removed from Who's Online, your unread posts are marked read (due to the way the cookie post reading system works). If you have saved your login information then you will automatically be logged back in again - only problem will be the fact that any unread posts are now read. Otherwise, you will have to log back in again.
My solution: Save your login information in case it happens again. (Tick the Remember Me box when logging in)0
