Debt Relief Order

I made a post on Sunday mentioning the irony of the fact that I'd just gone BR and was about to go through the process again in assisting a friend who has psychiatric problems. I requested the post be deleted as I believed it might be miscontrued and I didn't really want to go into his problems.
Anyways, last november, he was advised by CAB and others to go BR for the "small" sum of £7500. I didn't really think this was the right path for him, but if that was what he was advised, so be it (he was adamant anyway; wanted it out of the way). I'd been reading up on DRO's over the weekend as an alternative.
I booked a court date yesterday for his BR. The earliest they could do was mid April (12 weeks away and the guys a nervous reck). I was going to subsequently chase cancellations for him.
I went along to CAB with him this morning and both the CAB lady and my self more less in unison brought up the DRO path. What was said:
So, we're leaving the BR path open, I'm not chasing court cancellations, and we're hoping we can get a DRO instead (earlier than the proposed mid April BR date - which we'll then cancel).
Just letting you know ...

- The CAB people in our area have not yet been trained up on DRO's, so they don't yet know the full ins and outs.
- DRO's come into play Monday 6'th April.
- It costs £90.
- No court appearance necessary.
- OR will be involved, though not sure if this will require an interview.
- CAB can kick off a DRO on the spot, on or after 6'th April.
- Same rules apply as a BR, though the credit reference file will highlight a DRO rather than a BR.
- My friends DLA should not be included as income on a BR SOA, though they don't yet know if it should be listed for a DRO?
So, we're leaving the BR path open, I'm not chasing court cancellations, and we're hoping we can get a DRO instead (earlier than the proposed mid April BR date - which we'll then cancel).

Great news MrE - I am sure it will all get sorted for him whichever route he/you decide to take.
There is a little update from the CAB on the Debt Relief Order thread saying it is all systems go for April.
I am sure it will be a good thing for many people.
Have a good afternoon.
