I can confirm that this is really necessary when calling Alliance&Leicester using their geographical phone numbers. Otherwise they reject the call.

On my home phone, if someone has dialled 141 (or used the pre-programmed equivalent) I get the message "number withheld". If the call has genuinely come from overseas I get the message "number not known".

If the large companies technology was that good they would be able to distinguish.

If you use 18866 on geographical numbers sometimes your number shows up sometimes it comes through as an international number. You cannot decide it depends how they route your call.
