insurance for australian imported car

hi all, I'm currently living and working in australia. I bought an aussie brute V8 car (they're cheap as chips here as is the petrol). I want to bring it back to the UK, Iknow about all the hoops I must jump through to import it but there's no point if it can't be insured.
I've tried searching the net for answers but to no avail.
does anyone know of an insurer that will issue cover for a car manufactured in australia?
the car is a Ford Falcon so there is no equivalent car made or sold in the whole of the EU.

some insurers do insure imports & grey imports.

    for example.

your best ringing the insurers directly.
  • Really any insurer should be able to offer you cover, it's up to the individual company. Normally it will be on a temporary basis (eg 14 days) whilst you get the car registered with DVLA. The car should be insured under it's chassis number, then you tell them they registration mark once it's been registered.

If you have problems with normal insurers then contact BIBA (British Insurer's & Broker's Association) who will help you find a specialist broker

You should also find out if a model report exists for the car in the UK. When you import a car to the UK it has to undergo an SVA test to make it UK road legal. Part of this entails the use of a model report which amongst other things has the official co2 figures that the car will be registered with. If one does not exist for this car it could cost anything from hundreds to over £1000 to have this created for you.

I have a japanese import car and many insurers offer cover, although in general it is best to steer clear of the big names and go for the specialists. a quick google should reveal some. A-Plan and SKY are very good for japanese cars, maybe worth a try
