Can I make PC monitor work like a TV also?

Options
OK, this may be the dumbest question you've seen yet but I'm asking anyway! Our home PC is in my DD's bedroom. She has no TV or ariel socket. The PC has a nice large flatscreen monitor....can it have something added to make it work like a TV or do I need an ariel socket? Any sugesstions?

Thanks x

  • You can get one of these Hauppauge USB freeview adapters: http://www.netshop.co.uk/productcategorydetail.aspx?categoryid=55547
  • You'll need to plug in an aerial of some sort. Most PC TV tuners come with a small aerial but depending on the the strength of the Freeview signal in your area you may need a better or external aerial in exactly the same way as you would with a normal TV. You can also buy external TV tuners that plug into the monitor and work in the same was as PC TV Tuners but don't actually require the PC.

Whichever method you choose though you will need to make sure you have a good enough signal in exactly the same way you would a normal TV. If you're in doubt take another TV and plug it in in her room and see if you can get all the Freeview channels you expect .

Can't do this I'm afraid as there is no ariel point and too expensive for me to get one. Great advice though Thanks. I'll look into it now I know it's possible.

  • It might do.. doesn't matter which TV tuner you have it's dependant on the strength of the signal in your area. Some people struggle with a external roof mounted aerial to get all channels, others can get away with a little cheapie freebie aerial. It's entirely dependant on signal strength which is down to where you live and the strength and quality of the signal. Whatever method you choose you'll need an aerial of some sort.
