Porting number from Telewest to BT

Friends of mine want to reconnect their BT line and take their Telewest number over to BT. I realise that BT liaise with TW in order to port the number but do BT actually give TW notice to quit on behalf of the customer? I guess if they do then it will take 30 days for BT to reconnect the line as this is how much notice is required by TW to cancel the service.
They also have the TV service from TW and realise they have to give notice to quit that service, just confused with the process for the phoneline.
Any help \ advice would be appreciated.

If they call BT on Freephone 0808 100 5152 they will sort out the porting of the number, and a suitable ready for service date on BT.
Your friends will need to give notice to Telewest once they have agreed a date with BT when they want service to commence.PF.0 -
Yes they do - worked perfectly when my Mother did it so she could take full advantage of 1899 etc.

Expect a call from TW to persuade you to stay!0 -

So if they were to speak to BT today and say they want to reconnect in 30 days time, they then need to phone TW giving 30 days notice to cancel the TV service?0 -
We were on TW and moved to BT keeping our number.
We rung BT and arranged a date with them for them to reconnect. This date was in approx 25 days time from when I rung them. BT informed us that they will take care of everything their end but I did ring TW anyhow a few days to ensure they had their 30days notice. The main reason for this is that if there was a problem of somekind and BT couldn't come out or they came out but discovered a problem that stopped them from connecting us then we would still have TW.
In the end there was no problem and they came out reconnected us and arranged for our number to be ported to BT. It did mean that for a few days we paid line rental to TW for the remainder of the notice period but it is a very small price to pay knowing that if BT couldn't connect us then we still had TW.
We did get a call to try and convince us to stay but we moved anyhow simply because they couldn't price-match the free evening & weekend for 12months OneTel were doing and price-match the 2p per call for daytime calls from Call18866 (it was 2p then and has gone up now).
They did try and charge us extra for the TV package we had because the TV package was on the condition that we had their line rental - I believe it is/was around £3/£4 extra if you don't have line rental. I told them to cancel the TV as well then and we'll move over to Sky so they credited the difference to keep us as a TV customer.
We also kept their broadband simply because its cheap, totally unlimited with no caps/bandwidth throttling of anykind unlike many other ADSL broadband packages. This is especially true now that we have 2mb unlimited broadband for £17.99p/month.0
