UK inflation tipped for big fall

Lotus-eater wrote: »Well yes, we import the goods that are cheaper, or we can't grow, obviously.
But the other bit is what I said before.... yes we could grow alot of the stuff we need here, if the demand were here.
The trouble is and I don't think you got my point here. The demand is for fruit and vegetables that are out of season here, ie we CAN'T grow them. Unless that demand changes and as I said, barring disaster it won't, then we carry on.
The demand is not only due to price. Unless you want to go back to eating a hell of alot of cabbage during the winter as our grandparents did (and I do, because I generally eat seasonally) then cost has very little to do with it.
I dont think you see that is what I am saying if cost were to high the country could cope, we would not starve. But even some out of season stuff we can polly tunnel and store.
I am just saying people think we import everything even all our food and if prices go up we simply have to keep buying forign food.
it is simply not true like you said we just eat seasonaly.:)0 -
What because I state the full price of a basket and not just one price Carol.
You were wrong Carol. I think you will find food inflation is easing (I think it was nearer 12% Nov)
But why tell the truth when you can paint it black.
PS I said is Sexism OK? So was correct. If you use sexism you are a Sexist.
I could not say is sexist ok could I?
It's only sexism if I directed that comment at you because you are (I presume? don't know) a man. I had no idea of your gender, TBH. I made that comment because you don't appear to know how much your food costs. Price of a basket is only relevant if you buy exactly the same items every month. Do you? I don't. My December basket, for example, would have contained lots of seasonal items - no comparison there.
That's why I compared one item - no risk of confusion there. But I take your point - 1 swallow does not make a summer. However, I have noticed this pattern replicated across a huge range of items, hence my post
Without posting a long list of hundreds of items and their comparison prices, which would (A) take too long and (B) be too dull for me to post or you to read, I suggest you hop over to Shop but don't drop and look at some of the threads there on food shopping prices.
Thanks.0 -
Perhaps if we have to go back to eating as our grandparents did there would be a lot less grossly overweight people in this country?0

But you know I am a Man so don't lie carol to divert your sexist comment.
We do a 5 week basket ( A different shop each week then repeat on the 5th week if you get what i mean) so buy the same things every 5 weeks as you said you don't so your actual fact of prices going up is not based on the like for like shop I do.
I thought it is more than obviouse now prices are starting to ease like the bread quote above.

We're basically saying the same thing. There is only one reason why we would start growing alot more of our food again and change our eating habits and that reason is disaster. If we lose all our oil stocks, or if we lose all computerised circuits then we would be back to the dark ages in a few days etc etc.I dont think you see that is what I am saying if cost were to high the country could cope, we would not starve. If and its a big if, we had several years advance notice, we might be able to do something about it
People are not going to start eating seasonally just because the cost of courgettes in January go up by 50%, they still buy the courgettes. Maybe I am wrong and we will gradually change, but I don't think so.Freedom is not worth having if it does not include the freedom to make mistakes.0 -
So - let me get this straight - do you really buy the same basket every month? No matter what special offers are going on/occasions like Christmas?
Don't you all die of culinary boredom?
(I realise this is a culinary point not a financial one.)0 -

Yes I will buythe same things but obviously buy a version which is on offer if it is on offer.
Unlike most of the current population I cook So perhaps that is why my basket is deflating.
TV dinners is my idea of culanary boredom but if you buy chicken breast mince meat etc and potatoes, pasta etc you can make hundreds of different meals.
Don't slate me if you are not creative in the kitchen.;)
But do give all the people who insist inflation is not easing.

Gives you some idea that prices are going to keep coming down for some time yet.0 -
I cook too - so that's not the difference.
Not clear why your basket is showing such difference to mine then.
Interesting.
Are you 'branding down' ie going for cheaper discount brands to get the same price, or cheaper cuts of meat etc to make up the difference in cost?0 -

No Carol, I buy healthy option mince, normal chicken, 3 for £3 best of both bread etc.
Perhaps Tesco are playing the south but I can honestly say my basket as come down in the last 3 months (last week was very cheap but a lot of the basket was on offer but we are still seeing drops) and my expenses as a whole.0
