UK inflation tipped for big fall

Amazing.
That'll cause a lot of problems to holders of contracts referring to the RPI. Do payments fall if the contract states, "...increase in line with RPI..." for example? The contract says increase quite clearly but also says in line with the RPI.Wait till RPI goes negative and hold him to his word!!!
Well on the 10's thousands of contracts I have seen with RPI related increases in rent etc they saw this potential minefield coming years ago and states that rent will be:-
a) Current Level of Rent immediately preceeding the annual review date
b) Current Rent * Index
Whichever is greater
It will obviously depend on the specific lease / contract etc.0 -
Not true on food the graph is 12 months so could have peaked at 15 and come down to 10% yoy. (our shopping is cheaper in the last three months
) a 3 month one would give a fair idea.
We import a lot of our food!
What food we can not basicly grow. If it is more econmocal to buy british we buy british so the exchange rates should be good news for british farmers.
Yes, but it didn't.
I can tell your post is written by someone who doesn't do the bulk of the food shopping. As the one who does do the food shopping for our family (and who happens to have an extremely good if otherwise useless memory for numbers), I can assure you that food prices have continued going up drastically after xmas as well as before eg Tesco value pasta - was 19p a few months ago, went up to 39p, then 41p and is now 43p (my family eats lots of pasta.....).
And I could replicate that over and over again.
Have a look at numerous threads on the subject on Shop but don't drop etc etc.
Food prices in this country are continuing to rise. No let up, despite cheaper transport costs.
Clearly lots of our food we simply cannot grow ourselves, even if we had the industry, we don't have the climate. I'm not doing without chocolate - are uou going to live withot coffee? Tea? etc etc etc etc.0 -
The problem is not what food can't we grow, its when we can't grow it.What food we can not basicly grow. If it is more econmocal to buy british we buy british so the exchange rates should be good news for british farmers.
We can grow many types of vegetables and some fruit, but only at certain times due to our climate. If we all went back to seasonable eating, we would supply a lot more of our own food, after a while of course.. you can't just demand a field full of carrots to appear and fruit even more so.
But unless we have a disaster of some sort, its not going to happen.Freedom is not worth having if it does not include the freedom to make mistakes.0 -

So you are saying we dont export food either.
Farmers grow down to price and demand. Food wise if it was not cheaper to import the UK could easily be self sufficiant.0 -
I don't see your point? Of course farmers grow to demand, that's what I said.So you are saying we dont export food either.

I think the two wars proved that we cannot easily be self sufficient. I haven't seen any figures, but I would guess that it would take many years to be in that position, but that we just about could do it.Freedom is not worth having if it does not include the freedom to make mistakes.0 -

No, it's sexist - my conclusion (that you don't do the main food shop) was drawn not by your gender but by your complete lack of knowledge of food prices.
If I am a bigot, then you go food shopping with your eyes shut, frankly.0 -

So you missed the point of my post.
That we import the goods which are either cheaper or that we could not grow.
If these food goods were cheaper to grow here (due to exchange rates etc) we could still grow most of them here if the demand (due to price) was here.
Luckly we are not a dust bowel so in reality farming is one industry we should have a lot of faith in.:)0 -

What because I state the full price of a basket and not just one price Carol.
You were wrong Carol. I think you will find food inflation is easing (I think it was nearer 12% Nov)
But why tell the truth when you can paint it black.
PS I said is Sexism OK? So was correct. If you use sexism you are a Sexist.
I could not say is sexist ok could I?0 -
Well yes, we import the goods that are cheaper, or we can't grow, obviously. So you missed the point of my post.

But the other bit is what I said before.... yes we could grow alot of the stuff we need here, if the demand were here.
The trouble is and I don't think you got my point here. The demand is for fruit and vegetables that are out of season here, ie we CAN'T grow them. Unless that demand changes and as I said, barring disaster it won't, then we carry on.
The demand is not only due to price. Unless you want to go back to eating a hell of alot of cabbage during the winter as our grandparents did (and I do, because I generally eat seasonally) then cost has very little to do with it.Freedom is not worth having if it does not include the freedom to make mistakes.0
