Thanks - I really needed something to compare to! I think the majority of this might be our water heater as also it has been running too hot and boiling the water, according to our plumber...
Unfortunately we don't have a bath or a tumble drier either (though I would love one - have nowhere to put our sheets to dry!)
Our flat is really damp - we have lots of condensation even when no heating/cooking; is there anything we could do to stop this?
Also, I don't really have £130 (the extra after DDs) to give the electricity company, would they just up my DDs for the rest of the year and take that as payment? It seems from the website that they are asking for all the money right now.
    Thanks for your help

I had two broken thermostats on my immersion when I first moved in, consumption reduced immediately these were fixed. You don't want a tumble dryer - 4 KW per hour on average! Unless it was properly vented or a condenser dryer you would have even more damp. I have one of these

and drape large stuff over the shower screen! :p My brother uses the launderette to dry large stuff as they are ground floor and can't open the windows.

Damp makes a property feel much colder than it is, this needs sorting ASAP. The water will be coming from the two of you breathing, from airing laundry and showering. Either you must wipe all the windows down and open the windows for an hour or two daily (cold!) or get a small dehumidifier and run it overnight on the cheap rate. Once you notice less water being collected you can reduce use to just when you are drying laundry. Much cheaper to run than an electric heater or tumble dryer.

The second one was for 1 month (Dec.) night(???) units @ 9.75p. plus (another) daily standing charge of 34.22p. = £340.26!!!
3 bedroom house, 3 storage heaters, 1 panel heater, 1 electric fire, 2 towell rails, 1 fridge/freezer, 1 upright freezer, 1 under unit freezer. Washing machine 1-2 times a week, tumble dryer on rare occassions.

    In a nutshell...
    Insulate your home
Use Air Source Heat Pumps to heat your home
Change your Electricity Tarriff to a much cheaper standard one

Your costs will tumble AND you'll be warm; have a read of 'Heat Pump Inverter DIY' over on the Fuel & Other Heating Board if you want to investigate further.

Dual fuel with British Gas Click 6:

    From Oct 3rd 2008 - 12th January 2009

    Electric 852 kw/h with discounts taken off + vat = £97.63

Haven't had the gas yet but by my calculations around £160...

2 adults and two boys under three so have to (wife's orders) keep the thermostat around the 20c mark to keep the wife and kids warm. I think £260 or so for a quarter (that's been colder than normal) is allright and, as spring approaches, we'll use less. We're already a day in hand with the gas compared to last quarters use.

Well, not far off. Had to call BG today to request my bill for gas:

1250 ft3 = £161.78 so my calculations not far off.

Also quizzed them re Click 6 rates. Apparently 10% reduction on Click 6 gas price from 19/2 and also they are re-introducing the prompt payment discount so £30 a year for dual fuel if bills paid within seven days....

Was actually quite pleased with ours. With Eon for gas and electric.
was £305 (including vat) for the quarter 30th oct to 26th jan. About £185 was electric (with all the kids gadgets and oh big tv not suprised and this was same as last bill). Gas made up the other £120.
We are in a 3 bed semi open on one side (corner of the cul de sac). We have gas central heating and water and a gas hob. Plenty of gadgets (and oh being in IT quite often have extra computers he is fixing for customers set up on test using electric).
3 kids including DD2 who is only 1 so we can't let the house get too cold. I am at home with the kids in the day so all in all expected it to be higher.

We have had the heating on less than last year and worn slippers/dressing gowns plus bought hot water bottles. With these and other tips off here we actually paid less this year than 12 months ago despite the price increases.

Would have been nice to pay even less, but pretty relieved all in all.
Even got em to reduce our dd as our usage has gone down and we were only down by 100 after the bill.

Got mine today. Average of 9.3 electric cost £105 and 93kwh gas cost £244. Was £334 including vat after discounts taken off. Used bit less electric and 3 extra kwh for gas per day. Not that bad considering the weather but still shockingly expensive as price of energy is atrotious. Oh well, roll on the english summer!

I started with good intentions of using less but after waking up cold in early hours went back to having it as warm as it needed it to be. Got 2 daughters with breathing and circulation problems and they were complaining too. Got rid of sky movies instead!
