What's the problem with our car?

On our way back to London from a weekend trip a warning light came up on the dashboard in our car saying 'Exhaust System Fault'.
During most of our journey, the warning light only came up occasionally, but the last 20 miles before London, the light was on permanently. The car was making small jerky movements towards the end of our journey as well, and was slow to move between gears. We had to drive in low gear.
Anybody's got an idea what the exact problem could be? We're driving a VW Golf 1.6FSI from 2005.
Thank you.

Could be Lambda sensor (exhaust gas composition).
    Happy chappy
  • on a serious note, undo the battery for 1 hour (if you know the radio code)

Take sensors out, clean them with some spirt

take it for a good hard thrash (once the engine temps are up)
  • Thanks for all the (useful) replies. We're taking it to the garage tomorrow morning. Hopefully it won't be too expensive to fix!

FSi engine - has it been run on 98 octane fuel all the time? It should have been.

Time was cars would break down properly and cause you no end of hassle as you tried desperately to fix it by the roadside. These days the bloody things tell the problem and we immediately panic about it. Amazing, if a little muted, driving a modern car. What has motoring become? Hey ho! ;)

ETA: The jerky motion sounds like the limp home mode (do these cars have one?) to protect the car from further damage and enable you to complete your journey. I suspect if you take it to a decent mechanic or main stealer that they'll soon diagnose the problem. I can't see it being anything too serious on an '05 car unless it has galactic mileage and you've neglected it mechanically?
    CHEAP doesn't mean ETHICAL
  • The car's been fairly well looked after by the VW garage, Nail_Lad. And relatively low milage as well. I will let you all know the result of the problem tomorrow, hopefully.
