My dad works for rail mail. If the way people drive them, and the (lack of ) maintenance at his depot are reflective of the rest of RM i'd, steer well clear.
But it seems from comments on here that there might be a few jem's (i suppose its better than a builders van). As to whether you'd be lucky to drive one of these away from an auction...........well i guess you'll be able to tell us soon enough0 -
Auction isn't the place for a van, with a budget of £1500, you'll discover.
The VAT element, auction fees & your breakfast at the centre will mean you'd need to bid £1100 as your maximum figure.
So it's better to aska round independent van dealers, to see if they've any trade ins.
You'd need to be happy buying as a trade sale (likewise the dealer would have to be prepred to let you buy on these terms. Last thing he wants is a cheapie going wrong on the buyer & you expecting him to put it right!!
What you might consider, instead, is to get an estate car. You'll have more choice & a less used vehicle, to start with.
Cheap vans are NOT cheap vans - they're usually worn out!!

I once bought, about 7 months ago, a P reg transit with 147000 on the clock in automatic and except for replacing a starting motor she has not missed a beat even though she is starting to rust on the body a little.
Lucky I think lol0 -
I have owned an ex post office Vauxhall combo 1.3cdti for two years it is on a 55 plate I paid £2000 for it with 47000 miles fsh.I can honestly recomend these vehicles. You do know it will have bumps and bruises because of thge nature of work it will have done.ie the drivers seat wont be in the best condition coz of the in out in out in out.But since then our little van has cost nothing except servicing and mot it has been to the north of scotland down to the south of france( at very brisk speeds) and it has been gaggin for it.
I manage 440 miles to a tankfull .My next van will be another ex post office van which I am gonna convert into a camper it will be the LWB Iveco high roof
2.3 HPI
If you want a good van you cant go wrong with the combo ex post office most of them are electronically ltd to 70mph by PO whilst they own them.
