"A WhisperGen Micro CHP unit acts likes a normal high efficiency gas boiler, providing heat and hot water, but ingeniously it also drives a generator to produce electricity generating an average saving in household energy bills about £150 per year*." It costs about £3000 to buy and install.
"Inside each WhisperGen there is a small engine that drives a generator which is wired into your electricity system.
If you're using electricity at the same time as your WhisperGen is running, the electricity produced will contribute to your lighting, TV and other electrical appliances. The good news is that if you produce more than you require this will flow back out to the electricity supply network and could be used by others, and Powergen will pay you for this surplus electricity*."
Search google with 'whispergen' for much more information, like how it
works...
The payback is a bit slow, though. Perhaps the price will come down at some time.
Regards
George

The manufacturer of the product Powergen has been conducting trials with and is now offering to customers is based in New Zealand. Here is the link to their website.

As a replacement to an existing efficient condensing boiler it does not make much sense. However for a new installation the extra cost will pay back after a few years. However there are other innovative options to explore.
