Real pain if they're put in a loft. You need a remote programmer, remote thermostat and frost stat, you can't get to the reset button, you can't even see if they are actually working until you notice it's gone cold or there is no hot water.

Tell me about it! That's what I had to go through, really wasn't worht it in the end.

I looked into this and the plumbers were very cautious. Something about the pipes/rads from an open-system can't be 100% cleansed and the corrosion debris would likely shorten the life of the heat-exchanger system in a new combi-boiler.

Added a new combi to my old system when we extended 8 years ago and we have had problems with the heat exchanger for the hot water probably for the above reason... however it was a doddle to remove and clean out. Will need a new one before long no doubt but after 8 years its not so bad. Depends how old and scaled / dirty your system is i suppose.

No problem with them in the loft, programmer and thermostat are combined into one unit, wireless if need be, frost stat is advisable but not really needed almost all have built in protection now. If it needs resetting it's broken and will be a PITA wherever it is.

Try and put it as close to the bathroom/kitchen as you can. The water and gas can be run in the loftspace and the boiler can be installed on studwork (if needed) anywhere the manufacturer allows which with a vertical flue is a very wide range of positions.

Modern boilers will not tolerate a dirty system!
Mine needed a new fan so that must be whats wrong with yours:D
